Chrysler worked hard to position the Plymouth GTX as a luxurious, high-performance alternative to the inexpensive muscle cars at the other end of the scale. Available with all the pavement-twisting horsepower you could get in the more basic models, but with a ton of luxury features that could be added to create one-of-a-kind vehicles that would suit anybody’s taste. The GTX also got an extra dose of sound deadening materials and an upscale look to its interior appointments, truly making it a gentleman’s hot rod. And in the case of this loaded, Hemi-powered maroon GTX that still carries its original, matching-numbers engine, an incredible combination of performance and comfort that you just couldn’t find anywhere else.

Beautifully restored, this car exactly replicates the fender tag’s specifications, right down to original style redline tires. And when I say this car was loaded, I’m not kidding; here’s the fender tag decode:

Clearly the original buyer of this car knew what he wanted, and ended up with a gorgeous car with unusual luxury features like power windows and a rear window defroster, along with all the important performance hardware, including the big Hemi and power brakes to keep it under control. In addition, it carries a transmission cooler up front, which is extremely rare, and the Burgundy Metallic paint was a one-year-only paint. Even our resident GTX expert, who has owned and restored dozens of these cars, has never seen a 1968 Hemi GTX in this color. This is definitely a very special car.

The restoration was carried out several years ago, with a recent freshening performed by the capable crew at RKM Performance Center.  The GTX is in exceptionally nice condition with very little sign of use. Obviously a solid car to begin with, there are no wholesale panel replacements, just a few patches in the rear quarters in the usual spots. Panel alignment is very good, and thanks to the way these cars were built, the doors close with a solid feeling that you just can’t find anymore. The gorgeous Burgundy Metallic paint is simply stunning in person, with a deep, rich shine and an almost pearl effect in the studio under the lights. Of course it’s two-stage urethane, which means that it’s more brilliant and vastly more durable than the original stuff, and if there was a 1968 Plymouth that looked this good on the showroom floor, I’d be shocked.

Chrome and stainless was restored with the rest of the car, and remains in very good condition. The bumpers in particular are excellent, with the rest of the trim showing only slight signs of age, but no damage or wear. Glass is very good, and the original owner specified tinted glass all around, so this car has a very clean, uniform look. The original grille is undamaged, and the rear valence panel, which always costs a fortune to restore, is excellent.

Open that big hood with the Hemi letters on it, and you’ll find the original, numbers-matching 426 cubic inch elephant underneath. When it comes to stuffing an engine bay, there’s really nothing that can do it as well as a Hemi. From the Hemi Orange paint on the block, to the black wrinkle finish valve covers, to the big chrome Hemi air cleaner, this one is exceptionally well detailed. Someone clearly spent a lot of money making this one right (have you priced a Hemi rebuild lately?), and all the details you expect are there, including correct hoses and clamps, reproduction decals, and even the correct ballast resistor on the firewall. These cars are so well documented and the production details so thoroughly researched that there’s just no excuse for not getting the basics right, and this car nails them all. And there’s nothing like the sound of a Hemi—turn the key and it fires up with very little drama, but once it’s running, there’s no mistaking it. On the street, it roars, yanking the nose skyward and you’d better hang on tight as the transmission slips through the gears. Yeah, driving a Hemi is like nothing else you’ve ever experienced, and the luxury surroundings in this GTX do little to dilute the visceral experience.

The 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission is the ideal partner in a GTX, and I even like that this one has a column-mounted shifter, which only adds to its luxury appeal. The front-mounted transmission cooler is a very rare option and helps keep the transmission alive behind that monster Hemi. Out back, there’s a rugged 8.75-inch rear packing 3.23 gears and a Sure Grip limited slip as original, but given those skinny bias-ply tires, it definitely has its work cut out for it. The floors have been finished in matching Burgundy Metallic paint, which is a beautiful backdrop for the nicely detailed chassis. These are the original floor pans, and yes, we understand that it’s probably a little too nice under there, but on a car of this caliber, that’s to be expected. The exhaust is a correct OEM-style replacement system that has been reproduced in stainless for long-lasting durability and looks, and it has that traditional Hemi rumble. Front and rear suspensions have been rebuilt and feature new bushings and shocks all around. The power brakes are also fully rebuilt and stop the car with confidence. 15-inch steel wheels with “dog dish” hubcaps hold F70-15 Firestone Wide Oval redline tires, as original.

The red vinyl interior is proof that Chrysler was serious about taking the GTX upscale, as it is one of the most lavishly detailed driver’s compartments we’ve seen in a long time. Recently restored using high-quality materials, everything is new, and while they called it “red” it’s actually a well-matched maroon that compliments the exterior nicely. The seats have fresh foam so they’re firm, and they’re covered in beautiful and accurate covers. The dash pad has been restored, and the gauges are rebuilt, including the optional tachometer nestled in a corner next to the radio, almost like it was an afterthought. This car carries options like power windows and a rear window defroster, all of which are fully functional, along with the original Music Master AM radio with rear speaker. Correct carpets are on the floor, along with reproduction GTX floor mats, and the headliner is taut and wrinkle-free. The trunk includes a correct mat, matching spare tire and wheel, and a complete jack assembly.

This GTX is also very nicely documented, with a copy of the original build sheet as part of the package and detailing all the options. We also have a stack of recent restoration receipts that are included with the car.

We love the unusual ones, and this one is unique for all the right reasons: rare color, numbers-matching Hemi engine, and loaded with options. At the Mopar Nationals, this car will undoubtedly draw a crowd and it will be hard to resist taking it out on the road. It’s also surprisingly affordable, which is shocking in this day and age of six-figure Hemis. This car shows you exactly what Plymouth was trying to achieve with the GTX in the late ‘60s—luxury and performance in a handsome package.
