Description

If you're the type of person that prefers to make their own path regardless of where the paved road ends, then this 2012 Local Motors Rally Fighter might be the car for you. With 20 inches of travel, nearly 450HP, and a manually adjustable dual ride height, there are not a lot of places that the Rally Fighter can't go.

First off, let's catch you up on the history of the Rally Fighter. In 2007, John 'Jay' Rogers, Local Motors Co-Founder and CEO, set out to completely disrupt the way things work in the automotive industry. The team used open-source principles to change the way cars are designed, developed and brought to market. Just 18 months later the first Rally Fighter left the factory. Since then, only 2,000 Rally Fighters are produced per year.

Because of this, it's not too often you see a completed Rally Fighter offered for sale. The majority of Rally Fighter owners acquire a Rally Fighter by being incorporated into the build of the vehicle. The team at Local Motors will invite you out to their headquarters to work with a team of experts to design and build your Fighter. This particular Rally Fighter was built for, and owned by one of the greatest NASCAR crew chiefs of all time: Ray Evernham. Since being delivered to Evernham it has been driven scarcely and boasts only 479 miles on the odometer.

What appears to be an incredible two-tone paint job across an aggressive looking body shape is actually a vinyl wrapped exterior that is as durable as it is eye-popping. By choosing to go with a vinyl exterior, Local Motors claim they save 12 pounds over choosing to paint each vehicle. In-fact, Local Motors boasts that their vehicles are 30% lighter than other off-road street legal vehicles. Most importantly however, the Vinyl wrapping also gives the customer a blank canvas to make their Rally Fighter stand out, and not to mention extremely easy to repair should you knick the body. Under the body you'll find a tubular steel space frame that Local Motors designed by working with top desert racing engineers to design the tubular steel chassis.

Glance under the hood and you'll find powering the Rally Fighter is a GM LS3 E-Rod 376ci all aluminum V8 that produces 430 horsepower at 5,900 RPMs and 424 lb./ft. of torque at 4,600 RPMs. The LS3 sits back quite far in the powder coated frame to give a great front-rear weight ratio. Before being chosen for the power plant of the Rally Fighter, the LS3 was painstakingly modernized by GM to be street legal even by the tough California standards. Bolted to the block, is a GM 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission that sends power to a Ford 9-inch rear-end with a 4.11 gear. Mash the throttle, and the Rally Fighter will rocket from 0-60 in six seconds flat. Give it enough room and it can achieve a top speed of 131mph. The team also decided to keep the car a RWD vehicle. This makes for an incredibly fun ride on or off the street. But before you go thinking that an off-road vehicle has to be all wheel drive to avoid getting stuck, read about the incredible suspension, and tires that make the Rally Fighter more than equipped to cross mountains, rivers and dunes.

While the LS3 is a more than capable engine, the real Story of the Rally Fighter might be the suspension underneath the ride. At nearly 70 inches tall, 80 inches wide, and a 115 inch wheelbase, the Rally Fighter has one mighty tough suspension underneath it to tackle any environment you want throw at it. Tilt the hood forward and you'll see King coil-over shocks with piggyback reservoirs that are equipped on both the front and rear. But it doesn't stop there, billet upper and lower front control arms ensure that no hill will get the best of the Fighter. The combination of the King coil-overs, independent double a-arms, and a detachable stabilizer bar helps the Rally Fighter achieve an unbelievable 18 inches of travel in the front suspension! At the back of the car you will find a reverse triangulated four-link rear suspension housing the rear-end that is capable of 20 inches of travel. At the corners you will find 4-wheel disc brakes and 17x8 aluminum alloy Method Racing Bead Locks rims that have been wrapped in 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac's that provide excellent grip regardless of the environment.

Inside the Rally Fighter you don't feel like you are in a rugged off-road machine at all. Open the doors and you'll find an interior that is capable of comfortably housing yourself and three of your closest friends. Black bucket seats greet the driver and passenger, and in the center a white handle grip shifter for the automatic transmission. Above the shifter is the dash that houses the GPS navigation screen that doubles as a DVD player and back up camera. Bluetooth is also standard in the Rally Fighter along with a full spare tire and jack. The Rally Fighter might look like a race vehicle, but inside it is all luxury.

The sale of this Rally Fighter includes GM limited warranty paperwork that verifies Ray Evernham as the previous owner, an owner's manual, and installation and maintenance paperwork.

You don't have to be an off-roading fan to appreciate the engineering behind this Rally Fighter. The team at Local Motors has created a true off-roading beast that is capable of an incredible ride on or off the street. Let's do a quick recap: Over 400 horsepower, 4-speed automatic, only 479 miles, nearly 70 inches tall, and 0-60 in 6 seconds. There's no denying it, the Rally Fighter has fun written all over it. Don't miss your chance to add this one-of-a-kind machine to your collection.
