Description

I'm certain the day will come when future enthusiasts refer to the early part of the 21st century as the golden years of horsepower. Gas was cheap, technology made high performance cars easy to build, and about the only thing that mattered was getting to the next stoplight faster than the guy beside you. From 260 horsepower front-wheel-drive econoboxes to 605 horsepower 4-door Autobahn assassins, it truly was one of the best times to be a car enthusiast. And, fortunately, low-mileage muscle like this factory-fresh Camaro Z28 allow a few lucky car guys to hang onto those days just a little bit longer. Immaculately maintained and rarely driven, this coupe wraps GM's top option LS1 and a stout Tremec 6-speed in a slick black and silver color combination. If you're longing for modern muscle that has the showroom appeal of a new car without the inflated sticker shock, this sweet F4 is the bargain you've been waiting for!

Whether they wanted to create higher quality cars for future collectors, or simply make as much money as possible on as much inventory as possible, it seems GM's mindset was to assemble many final year F-Bodies with a generous list of optional equipment. Garaged and pampered since it was one of the last vehicles to roll off GM's Sainte Therese, Quebec assembly line, this awesome Camaro is an essentially new offering that's averaged only 247 sunny day miles per year. The car's GM-applied Sebring Silver two-stage presents as new and, naturally, showroom-fresh fit is as close to perfect as a factory car can get. There isn't a speck of road rash anywhere on its nose, and the rockers, devoid of tire spinning battle wounds, are as clean and perfect as the day they rolled off the assembly line. In a world where the newest Camaro has inspired a renewed love affair with first generations cars, it's nice to see a pristine F4 that represents the no-compromises big engine, all speed mentality which team Camaro championed for most of its existence.

On a 14 year old road car, the devil's in the details. And one close look at this awesome Z28 confirms the coupe's two previous owners took details very seriously. Up front, one of the most aggressive faces Chevrolet ever produced hangs factory-fresh headlights above a Flat Black grille, HID fog lamps and optional rocker extensions. At the sides of that face, sporty “Z28” emblems provide excellent contrast to body-matched moldings, body-matched mirrors and optional sill extensions. Above those emblems, leak-free T-tops cap fresh greenhouse glass and an original, raked windshield. And, out back, an optional wing floats above tri-color tail lights, a third “Z28” emblem and an optional bumper extension.

Cosmetic appeal aside this Camaro is, first and foremost, a performance machine: the car's BEST attribute is going fast. Lift the sculpted hood and you'll find a potent Generation III V8 which is the forerunner to virtually all the technology still featured in GM sports cars. Utilizing an aluminum block and heads, flat top pistons and coil near plug ignition, that efficient, overhead valve LS1 is conservatively rated at 305 horsepower and 335 lb./ft. of Kansas-flat torque. Mechanically, the small block presents a spotless, like-new appearance, and the engine compartment looks exactly as it did when the car left the showroom roughly 14 years ago. In general, LS1s are super stout pieces which are virtually indestructible. And, while we know this car has been babied, you're probably not going to break a fourth generation Camaro. Twist the key and the cylinders rumble to life, sending rhythmic notes through subtle factory exhaust. Goose the throttle and the engine smoothly zings toward redline. And the car's effortless power really begins to show itself when given enough room.

Take a look under this Chevy and spotless floors, clean stainless hardware and fresh factory equipment make it clear the car's previous owners were absolutely meticulous about maintenance. Behind the engine, you'll find a slick-shifting Borg Warner T56 6-speed, which spins a 10-bolt, posi-traction rear end around friendly, 2.73 gears. Braking is provided by four discs, which have been upfitted with standard anti-lock. Exhaust flows through aluminized factory pipes to a transversely mounted muffler and fourth generation-exclusive tips. At the corners of the car, 16-inch wheels are mounted to sticky 245/50 Goodyear Eagle RS-As. Unlike Camaros of the past, the fourth generation has the hardware to maximize all of its power thanks to a performance-tuned double A-arm front and 3-link rear suspension. And, with all those basics secured, GM's official mediator for its performance madness, Acceleration Slip Regulation, was installed and activated.

Inside the car, fresh bucket seats adjust electronically for the driver and fit like a glove all around, while a leather-clad steering wheel sports convenient thumb controls for an awesome Monsoon sound system. The instrument panel is a familiar and legible GM layout which features a built in Driver Information Center next to a large tachometer and sweeping speedometer. Between the seats, a small shifter sits in a straight and clean console. And naturally, all the luxuries you'd expect in a modern car are present and accounted for including: power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, a power trunk and remote keyless entry with GMs PASSkey theft deterrent system. It's always hard to describe a car that's essentially new in every way. So I'll just sum this Z28 up by saying that everything is in impeccable working order, from the optional cruise control all the way to the ice cold air conditioning.

The sale of this silver panther includes an original Plant Manifest, an original Owner's Manual, the aforementioned window sticker, an unopened wheel lock socket and two sets of keys.

Looking back on the long history of the F-Body, there's little doubt that this 2000 Z28 is one of the fastest, best-handling and most enjoyable Camaros of all time. It exhibits the best of everything from one of the last authentic pony cars, and it's the perfect fit for any serious collector who loves showroom-fresh muscle. Buy the car and stash it away for a few decades, or take it out and enjoy every second of one of the best eras of automotive performance!
