Start talking muscle cars and the second generation Chevelle is almost always directly referenced. Offered in trim levels ranging from stripped economy champ to luxury pavement pounder, Chevrolet produced Chevelles that were capable of satisfying nearly every buyer and every wallet. That legacy of universal appeal has continued throughout the last 50 years, giving fans and aficionados the parts and inspiration to create their own unique hot rods. Take this '72 Super Sport for example. Updated with modern drivetrain and interior components during an exhaustive, ground-up restoration, this tastefully modified Chevy turns a traditionally appealing platform into an off-the-charts super star. Originally sold at Ardery Chevrolet in Windsor, Connecticut, and originally purchased by Edward Lawton of Wethersfield, Connecticut, this solid Malibu spent most of its life roaming The Land of Steady Habits. Recently, when a PPG Industries employee purchased it as a personal project, the car underwent a detailed, rotisserie restoration that involved wholesale replacement of everything but its roof panel. Once countless hours were spent making sure that mix of OEM and reproduction sheetmetal aligned to better-than-factory fit, bright silver base was detailed with black rally stripes, sealed in wet-looking clear and fitted with a contrasting vinyl roof. And presently, this coupe carries an exceptionally clean finish on top of a high quality restoration that's simply stunning.

An obviously solid road warrior that's been converted into one of the sickest rides around via choice customization, this red-hot Chevy is a picturesque magazine centerfold that's just waiting to be discovered. At the front of its body, clear halogen headlights float between a black grille, bright parking lamps and a fresh chrome bumper. At the top of that grille, a familiar cowl induction hood founds new glass beneath polished stainless trim and custom-fitted F2 Camaro sport mirrors. At the sides of that hood, modern “SS” emblems and Trim Parts “454” scripts hint at the true nature of the big block's personality, while traditional door handles perfectly complement straight fender lips and factory-spec marker lamps. And at the back of the car, a second fresh bumper hangs traditional taillights between a third “SS” emblem and bright stainless exhaust tips.


Glance under this Chevelle's sculpted hood and you'll find a 460 cubic inch big block V8 that's been bored, polished and tweaked to an estimated 540 horsepower. At the top of the mill, an aggressive March air cleaner feeds oxygen to an 850cfm Holley 4-barrel that's centered on an Edelbrock Endurashine intake. That air/fuel mixture travels into Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, which hang cast, Chevrolet-branded valve covers over forged rods, forged pistons, a forged crank and a fully balanced rotating assembly. At the bottom of those heads, coated Hooker Competition headers send spent gases into high performance, true-dual pipes. At the back of those headers, an aftermarket HEI distributor shoots spark through Moroso-loomed Taylor Thundervolt ignition wires. In front of those wires, an attractive March serpentine system spins a Weiand aluminum water pump between a chrome alternator and billet power steering components. And in front of those components, a big, aluminum-cored radiator makes good use of dual electric puller fans. Aesthetically, the spotless engine bay's selective combination of dim and vivid paint creates an alluring palette that attracts gearheads in the same manner flowers attract bees. And everything, from the ARP bolts and chrome brake booster to the Russell fuel lines and ball-milled radiator support, has been professionally installed and thoughtfully detailed.


What good would a killer engine be without a tough drivetrain and solid suspension to back it up? Behind the car's thundering 454, a rugged Muncie M22 4-speed twists between a heavy duty clutch and proven Driveshaft Shop driveshaft. Torque flows to a familiar GM 12-bolt that's fitted with 3.55 gears, an Eaton posi-traction differential, Moser axles, a billet pinion yoke and a Moser inspection cover. That road-ready drivetrain rolls on a fully rebuilt double A-arm/4-bar chassis, which features UMI control arms, UMI sway bars and QA1 adjustable shocks. That chassis rests thanks to a CPP Big Brake Kit, which wraps red calipers around drilled and slotted rotors. Spent gases escape through 3-inch stainless Pypes exhaust, which, thanks to TIG welding, traps Street Pro mufflers between an X-shaped crossover and polished resonators. At the corners of the car, $5K worth of custom Boze Lateral-G wheels twist modern 255/40ZR19 front and 275/40ZR20 rear Nitto Invos around forged spokes. And everything, from the car's fully finished floors and Moroso oil pan to its stainless fuel tank and blasted, smoothed and glossed frame, is on mark, set and ready to show.


Naturally, this neo Super Sport's comfortable interior is a masterful blend of both form and function. Leather-wrapped SCAT PROCAR buckets are restoration-fresh attire that, along with factory door panels, present clean and crisp. Between those seats, an etched billet knob tops a long Muncie shifter. Below that shifter, rich carpet floats monochromatic, “SS” branded floor mats under custom, Pioneer-equipped kick panels and Pilot foot pedals. At the front of that carpet, an “SS” branded dash frames a multi-function Pioneer head unit and Auto Meter Carbon Fiber Ultra-Lite gauges in a brushed Classic Dash instrument panel. In front of the driver, a sweet Budnik Velocity steering wheel spins a thick, half-wrapped rim around a fixed column. And behind the passengers, a restoration-fresh trunk features weather-free spatter paint.
