The 1970 Chevelle is one of those timeless designs that look good no matter how they're built. Stock, modified, race, pro-touring, whatever, the clean lines and balanced stance on these tough muscle cars create classic swagger that's an excellent platform for major modification. And best of all, universal appeal and relatively high production numbers mean the Chevelle has one of the largest networks of aftermarket support in the collector car hobby. Born from that awesome combination of appeal and support, this killer Super Sport mixes custom aesthetics with serious performance to put a 21st century twist on a old school favorite!
BODYWORK/TRIM
One just can't help but smile when they see a Chevelle this cool. It's everything car guys dream of from the first time they say “muscle car” to the day they trade a high octane V8 for an electrified rascal motor. Decked in smooth Charcoal basecoat, marked with black Super Sport war paint and detailed in orange outlining stripes, this Chevy is the product of a 4-year, 600-hour restoration that was completed in the summer of 2014. Its body is a carefully orchestrated combination of excellent panel gaps, doors that close better than new and a flat, near perfect finish that stretches from grille to valance. And, after you put that combo on the street, you'll understand why the car could easily earn the nickname 'neck breaker'!
Between 1968 and 1972, Chevrolet did a lot of tweaking to their popular Chevelle line. And, while each of those years has its finer points, this coupe proves why 1970 is generally the most popular. At the front of the car, modern, black-trimmed headlights frame a clean crossbar grille, clear parking lamps and a body-matched bumper. Above that bumper, a familiar cowl induction hood anchors like-new glass between painted drip rails, body-matched trim and correct, body-matched mirrors. Below those mirrors, shaved door handles, shaved marker lamps and shaved rocker trim leave monochromatic “SS454” badges as the only visual detail that interrupts the car's liquid-smooth profile. And at the back of that profile, a shaved decklid caps a second body-matched bumper that features smoked and black-trimmed taillights.
ENGINE
Lift this Chevy's tasteful hood and you'll find a fully detailed 468 that, thanks to a healthy overbore, produces roughly 550 horsepower! At the top of that monster mill, air flows through K&N X-Stream-style filters to a coated Quick Fuel Technology 4-barrel that's aligned with polished stainless fluid lines and a Carter mechanical fuel pump. A resulting air/fuel mixture makes its way from an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake to iron Chevrolet heads, which hide under slick, fabricated valve covers. Once those heads flood the cylinders, a familiar HEI distributor sequences fire through 8.5mm MSD Super Conductor plug wires. Resultant gases are jettisoned through coated Hedman Hedders long-tubes, which perfectly complement the block's Cast Silver skin. Naturally, cooling is provided by a beefy aluminum radiator, which is fitted with two SPAL puller fans. Charge comes courtesy of a polished alternator, which spins above modern air conditioning components thanks to a collection of March pulleys. And overall, the car's glossy engine bay is exceptionally clean, featuring details such as chrome dress up items, corrugated coolant hoses and a subtle radiator cowl.
DRIVETRAIN
Under this awesome A-Body you'll find a powdercoated chassis and LINE-X lined floors that, like the car's straight exterior panels and sorted big block, have been carefully restored to better-than-factory condition. At the center of those floors, a rugged Muncie M21 4-speed sends power to a correct GM 12-bolt, which spins a posi-traction differential around tough 3.55 gears. Holding that stellar drivetrain in place is a 2-inch-lowered suspension that backs tubular front control arms and boxed rear control arms with Hotchkis springs, QA1 shocks and a pair of beefy sway bars. That suspension turns thanks to modern power steering. Four power-assisted calipers squeeze four drilled and slotted rotors to provide plenty of stopping prowess. Exhaust flows through 2.5-inch stainless pipes to aggressive Magnaflow mufflers and spotless stainless tips. And power meets the pavement via orange-detailed BOSS Motorsports wheels, which spin 245/35ZR20 Lionhart LH-THREEs in front of 275/30ZR20 Lionhart LH-THREEs.
INTERIOR
Open the solid doors on this second generation Chevelle and you'll find a tasteful leather interior that was installed during the car's extensive restoration. Centered in those new components is a combination of fresh bench and bucket seats, which wear attractive, suede-enhanced skins. In front of those seats, a leather-wrapped dash frames a body-matched instrument panel, which frames Dakota Digital telemetry next to an MP3-compatible radio and Vintage Air climate control. Below that dash, premium carpet anchors a custom console and traditional Hurst shifter between color-keyed floor mats. Opposite that carpet, a suede headliner stretches rearward to a custom package tray. In front of the driver, a polished, “SS” branded steering wheel spins a suede-wrapped rim around a tilting, body-matched column. At the sides of the passengers, custom door panels hang polished handles and small power window switches above Boss kick speakers. And behind the cockpit, the car's carpeted trunk is finished with bowtie-branded paneling.
With its incredible motor, lust-worthy body and fully sorted chassis, this Chevelle is the very definition of storied Detroit muscle! The car's professional build, which combines stunning design with hardcore performance, represents first class showmanship at its very best. If you're in the market for a top-notch classic that'll win trophies and literally own the street, this is your kind of car!
