----------
Nothing beats an original, especially in the automotive world. In 2014, with the introduction of Chevrolet's seventh generation sports car and subsequent resurrection of the Stingray moniker, third generation Corvettes accelerated their ascent in to serious collector car territory. And this year, with the reintroduction of the brutal Z06, the virtue of vintage Vettes has been seeded in a rock-solid foundation. Sporting awesome Corvette Bronze paint, a body-off restoration and a numbers-matching, big block powertrain, this documented drop-top is the quintessential blue chip C3. And if you're looking to grab a pristine, investment grade Stingray before the market really ticks up, it's a perfect candidate for your next classic!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Authenticated by an original tank sticker, official GM Canada paperwork and an official NCRS Shipping Report, this Corvette rolled off GM's St. Louis assembly line on July 9th, 1968 and made its way north to Don Wheaton Limited in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Take a close look at the car's body and you'll find smooth fiberglass that's been stripped, sanded and fully restored to better-than-factory specifications. Naturally, that resin is straight and clean from any angle, as great care was taken to ensure tight fit and finish. On top of that first class alignment, correct Corvette Bronze base glistens under a modern clearcoat shine. That dynamic clearcoat was accented with clean trim, Satin Black rocker panels, a small luggage rack and correct White vinyl. And the result is one sweet sports car that feels much truer to its vintage than most run-of-the-mill red and blue C3s.
ENGINE
Beneath the sculpted hood you'll find the car's original “3935439” branded L36 (IQ) V8 which was cast on March ( C ) 26th, (26) 1968 (8), assembled in Tonawanda, New York (T) on May (05) 24th, (24) 1968 and stamped with a matching partial VIN. Straight from the factory, that beefy big block utilized a Rochester Quadrajet carburetor to twist stout 10.25 to 1 compression into a solid 390 horsepower! At the peak of the pavement-scorching mill, a polished and decaled air cleaner swirls wind in to a familiar Winters intake via the aforementioned 4-barrel. At the sides of that intake, correct cast iron heads hang stamped and polished valve covers above cast iron exhaust manifolds. And at the back of those heads, transistorized ignition sequences spark through sleeved plug wires. When fired, the infamous 427 rumbles like an old school stoplight slayer. Its ancillary components are top notch in every way, with GM-branded hoses and a rust-free master cylinder accompanying reproduction tower clamps and a high performance DeWitts aluminum radiator. And even Chevy Orange engine skin is seated in a clean, Satin Black frame.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Peer under this low-slung roadster and you'll find a pristine chassis that's straight, solid and ready for its close-up. The car's hot 427 twists torque through what appears to be an original Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed and correct Posi-traction rear axle. Beneath that drivetrain, a fully rebuilt suspension combines optional power steering with tight turns and increased grip. In the middle of the car, an aluminized, true-dual exhaust system pipes spent gases through rear-mounted mufflers and polished stainless tips. At the corners of the car, power-assisted disc brakes ensure quick, drama-free stops. And all that fully sorted hardware rolls on handsome Rally wheels, which spin fresh 225/70R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As around dent-free trim rings and turbine center caps.
INTERIOR
Slip in to this Stingray's correct Dark Orange interior and settle on one of its supple vinyl buckets. The carpet below those seats was replaced, even in the cargo area, where you'll find a surprising amount of storage space. The door panels at the edges of that carpet are, like the rest of the car's side panels, virtually new in every way. There's a fresh center console that accommodates a small shifter, chrome power window switches and a direct-fit AM/FM radio. From the driver's seat, a 3-spoke steering wheel laps factory gauges and a correct, telescopic column. And all that hardware unites to create a simple, comfortable cockpit that's befitting of a performance oriented brand like Corvette.
