The Subaru Impreza has always been one of those cars that do a great job of representing all things to all people. BODYWORK/TRIM

Thanks to a warm garage and impeccable maintenance, this low-mileage STi is essentially brand new in every way. The folks at Fuji's Gunma, Japan manufacturing facility must've known people paying well over $30K on a small car expected a different level of fit and finish; and with this striking STi Limited, they certainly delivered. ENGINE

In the early '90s, factory performance wars finally started heating up again. But this time, instead of Chevy, Ford and MoPar duking it out, the battle involved Japan's finest. So, the Japanese automakers identified a niche for affordable performance cars, and the fight commenced. Fossils flow through a custom IAG fuel system, which utilizes parts from Aeromotive, Auto Meter, Walbro and Injector Dynamics. An AEM MAP sensor combines with zinc-plated hardware, an IAG oil-air separator and a combination of billet and stainless plumbing to ensure everything works well together. Deeper in the cycle, a blueprinted, bored and honed block spins Manley Platinum Pistons and Manley H-beam rods between ARP studs, ACL Race Series bearings and Killer B oil ancillaries. High quality bolt-ons, like a TiAL Q blow off valve, a GrimmSpeed boost solenoid and a stainless TiAL turbine housing, round out the all-star modifications. And everything was pro-tuned using a COBB V3 Accessport.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Park this scooby on a lift and you'll find a well-preserved undercarriage that's every bit as nice as the car's slick profile. At the center of the floors, a factory-spec 6-speed offers full access to big power thanks to a resurfaced flywheel and fresh Advanced Clutch Technology clutch. Naturally, that gearbox feeds Subaru's much-admired symmetrical all-wheel drive system, which works in conjunction with Vehicle Dynamics Control and Active Torque Vectoring. Handling has always been a central focus for WRX models, and that attention to detail shows in this sedan's spry high performance suspension. Unlike the car's engine, that suspension remains in its stock configuration, taking curves well thanks to hydraulic power steering, a quickened 13 to 1 steering ratio and four power-assisted, “STi” branded calipers. Spent gases travel through a stainless pipe to a Vibrant catalytic converter and quad-tip Perrin cat-back exhaust system. And at the corners, monochromatic, “STi” branded wheels twist 245/40ZR18 Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

INTERIOR

Inside the car you'll find a stylish leather cockpit that's ready for autocrossing or road tripping. In the middle of the floors, red-trimmed seats center perforated pads inside clean French stitching. In front of those heated thrones, a conservative dash hangs red-lit gauges and a small Driver Information Center over an XM-capable, MP3-compatible stereo and tasteful carbon fiber trim. Below that dash, a red-tinged shifter looks perfect inside a slim console, which features a modified SI knob that controls the car's level of boost.
