----------

When it comes to being a street rod enthusiast, there's no time like the present. Anyone with a pile of catalogs and a nice savings account can build a head-turning custom that looks and performs better than OEM. And while universal access to top-notch componentry is leveling the show car playing field, it's also making it difficult to create something that's truly unique and memorable. As a result, visionary builders are constantly upping the ante in terms of quality and creativity. And the very best rods have become the cars that are well planned, feature a unifying design and employ excellent construction techniques. This 1934 Buick 56S is a professionally built custom that mixes years of careful planning with a comprehensive, frame-off restoration and unique, exceptionally cohesive aesthetics. If you're an anxious buyer who's tired of sorting through an endless blur of simply 'good' offerings, this classy tri-shield is the 'best' you've been waiting for!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Larger than your average street rod, this solid steel coupe began life as an upper class commuter that counted itself as 1 of only 1,150 1934 Model 56S Coupes produced. During a detailed, frame-off restoration, its old school body was shipped to Princeton, West Virginia's Bodyworks Inc. for thorough stripping, careful sanding and a fresh layer of custom PPG 2-stage. That 2-stage, applied in 2005, was sprayed over a mildly chopped roof, a shaved profile, a converted rumble seat and a tweaked rear roll pan. Aesthetic and functional updates manifest via shaved bumpers, '39 Chevy headlights, polished wipers, sculpted mirrors and flush-mount Lambert LED taillights. And everything was finished in tasteful factory trim, which includes an original grille, chrome hood spears and a classic Buick header emblem.

ENGINE

Take a look under the car's 3-piece double hinged hood and you'll find 5.7 liters of modern small block that, with a little help from Atlanta, Georgia's Southern Performance Systems, has been bolted to a polished Eaton/Magnuson Radix supercharger. Straight from the factory, GM's world-class Gen III LS1 V8 combines a sturdy aluminum block with lightweight aluminum heads, coil-near-plug ignition and aluminum flat top pistons to create razor-sharp throttle response and a torque band that's as wide as Texas. And when that kind of technology gets married to a blower, power literally becomes effortless! At the front of the 2000-vintage mill, smooth serpentine components spin a modern alternator and modern AC compressor beneath a conical air cleaner. Once air enters that cleaner, it's spun through a polished throttle body to completely stock internals. High-octane fossils are provided by GM electronic fuel injection. Sparks are sequenced through AC Delco plug wires. Spent gases roar through custom block hugger headers. And cooling comes courtesy of a beefy aluminum radiator that's fitted with a large electric puller fan. Aesthetically, both the black mill and its assortment of bright accessories seem right at home inside their rich, body-matched frame. And details like braided fluid lines, polished fluid reservoirs and custom valve covers ensure this Buick's looks match its performance.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Toss this coupe on a lift and you'll find solid floorpans that frame custom componentry in a clean coat of Gloss Black paint. Behind the smooth-revving small block, a polished and coated 4L80E 4-speed twists power to a polished driveshaft that's hooked to a polished and coated rear end. That pumpkin spins big, 3.73 gears, which ride inside a full fourth generation Corvette suspension that was installed by the pros at Wise Guys Rod Shop of Jonesborough, Tennessee. In typical show car fashion, that polished suspension sports full air assist that was engineered by the folks at Air Ride Technologies. At the front of those bags, modern power steering makes the most of Sunday drives. 4-wheel power disc brakes utilize drilled and slotted rotors to provide quick, drama-free stops. Charred dinosaurs float from the aforementioned headers in to 2.5-inch stainless pipes, which position mirrored turbo mufflers in front of polished, center-outlet tips. Torque transitions through polished Boyd Coddington blades, which spin 245/35ZR18 BF Goodrich g-Force T/As in front of 265/50R20 BF Goodrich g-Force T/As. And the car's shortened frame rails parallel a variety of top-notch finishing components that include stainless fluid lines, a modern brake booster, a finned transmission cooler and a large stainless fuel tank.

INTERIOR

Check inside this custom and you'll find a supple leather cockpit that was installed by Speedway Seat Covers of Johnson City, Tennessee. Firm bucket seats, swiped from a late-model Lexus SC400, feature monochromatic, Buick-branded covers. In front of those thrones, a custom-fabricated dash frames Sonny Mac Industries Hot Rod City gauges above Vintage Air climate control and familiar billet foot pedals. Beneath those pedals, tan carpet flows to color-keyed side panels. At the tops of those panels, a custom headliner frames a modern Pioneer CD player, which makes excellent use of high quality Painless wiring. In front of the driver, a Lecarra banjo-style steering wheel laps a tilting Ididit column. And behind the passengers, a carpeted and upholstered trunk maintains a large amount of storage space.
