----------

In the golden age of American muscle, the 442 was the ultimate option for sophisticated enthusiasts. And today, when you're looking to grab a piece of Detroit's finest iron without closing out your retirement, a clean, numbers-matching Oldsmobile is one of the smartest purchases on the market. There's no reason a blue chip classic should cost more than the mortgage on your house. And there's ABSOLUTELY no reason spending five figures of your hard earned money shouldn't get you a fully documented collector car like this incredible Hurst/Olds. Number 176 of the 912 Hurst/Olds built for the 1969 model year, this highly-optioned 442 pairs an original, 455 cubic inch V8 with a smooth-shifting 3-speed and correct Cameo, Firefrost and Black aesthetics. And if you're the kind of gearhead who likes to take their hardware to the show, it's the lust worthy trophy king you've been saving for!

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

According to the original Build Sheet included with its sell, this awesome 442, the 96th 1969 Hurst/Olds built by Oldsmobile, was assembled in Lansing, Michigan during the first week of April, 1969 and shipped directly to Demmer Corporation for conversion. According to documents from the Hurst/Olds Club of America, that conversion, the 94th performed for the 1969 model year, was completed on April 15th. After returning to Lansing for final inspection, the car began its journey to Black Oldsmobile of Greensboro, North Carolina on April 17th, and was eventually sold to Greensboro native Larry L. Bunting. As many of you know, all Hurst/Olds came with a small registration card that allowed the car's new owner to link up with Hurst Performance's unofficial marketing registry. Mr. Bunting promptly registered his new pride and joy. And, in typical fashion, Hurst issued this Olds a serialized identification number, engraved on a small plaque, that's still adhered to the car's dash almost 47 years later.

Since we're talking history, lets go ahead and break down this 442's VIN and Cowl Tag.

BODYWORK/TRIM

If you've checked out our high resolution photos, you already know that this sweet Oldsmobile is an impeccably restored classic. During its extensive, ground-up restoration, the car's solid profile was decked in correct Cameo White, splashed with metallic Firefrost Gold, trimmed in precise black and sealed in glossy clear. And today, having traveled mere break-in miles, it's one razor-sharp hardtop that mixes detailed aesthetics with a no-nonsense demeanor.

Like all second generation A-bodies, the 442 continued to get better year after year. The car's clean, boxy lines were no doubt a play on its parent division's engineering leadership within the GM hierarchy, and the resulting design continues to weather exceptionally well. At the front of this coupe, a stainless-trimmed, 442-spec grille hangs bright T3 headlights over a broad bumper that's finished with clear parking lamps. At the top of that grille, a correct Mailbox Hood centers brash “H/O 455” scripts in front of chip-free glass that's founded in mirrored stainless frames. At the sides of that hood, a whittled, stainless-trimmed profile anchors traditional GM door handles between color-keyed sport mirrors, rocket-themed marker lamps and familiar “HURST/OLDS” fender emblems. And at the back of that profile, a Hurst/Olds-branded decklid hangs a correct fiberglass wing over a second broad bumper, silver-trimmed taillights and correct, trumpeted exhaust tips.

ENGINE

It's not immediately apparent why this Olds's body carries so much sizzle; that is, until you see what's under its hood. Spring the latch, fling the steel and you'll find 455 cubic inches of Rocket V8 that hangs a correct 396021F casting number over a matching partial VIN. Stomp the throttle and a restored 4-barrel carburetor mixes juice from leak-free fuel lines with wind from a correct Cobra Jet air cleaner, and shoves it in to a high performance intake. At the back of that intake, a traditional points distributor feeds fire through fresh plug wires, which snake around correct “D” heads and polished valve covers. Below those covers, freshly restored exhaust manifolds shoot charred dinosaurs in to big, true-dual pipes. Mechanically, the stout mill is all day reliable, spinning 380 horsepower from one of the largest and most powerful valvetrains ever created. Aesthetically, familiar Satin Black fenders and bright red block skin look fantastic against the car's Cameo body. There's a roster of high quality ancillaries that includes a rebuilt alternator, a Saginaw steering box, a correct Frigidaire AC compressor and a familiar Delco Moraine brake booster. And the entire set up flat out rocks, from its fresh decals and vivid inspection stamps to its tagged oil filler and color-keyed intake springs.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

The bottom of this crisp A-Body is completely solid, showing no signs of undue wear or question-inducing battle scars. The aforementioned Rocket 455 fronts an original Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed, which hangs a correct “OH – 69” assembly tag opposite a matching partial VIN. That tough transmission twists power to a beefy, 12-bolt axle that's branded with a correct “SH” assembly stamp. That smooth driveline hangs in a familiar Firm Ride and Handling Suspension, which, along with the car's chassis, was carefully restored during the ground-up reboot. Solid stops are provided by standard power front disc and rear drum brakes. Turns come courtesy of optional power steering. At the center of the car, a fresh exhaust system funnels spent gases through throaty turbo mufflers. And everything rolls on correct Super Stock IIs, which spin F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs around dent-free trim rings, Argent spokes and rocket-branded center caps.

INTERIOR

Inside this impressive coupe, you'll find a correct Black interior that features a roster of optional equipment. At the center of the car, stainless-trimmed seats hang correct, striped headrests above fresh carpet that's protected by thick floor mats. In front of those seats, a wood-trimmed dash hangs an original Hurst plaque and optional Rally Pac telemetry beside factory air conditioning, a correct AM/FM radio, optional Cruise Control and an optional 8-track player. At the sides of that dash, clean door panels front optional power windows and optional power door locks. Opposite those panels, a small console frames a requisite Hurst shifter. Opposite that island, a tight headliner bridges the gap between an optional map light mirror and an optional rear window defogger. In front of the driver, a wood-trimmed steering wheel laps an optional tilting column. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk anchors a fifth SSII wheel and full-size spare tire between a correct jack, correct decals and a fresh mat.
