----------

There are two guaranteed ways to stop traffic with a classic Camaro. You can take the traditional path and buy a highly optioned original car that's fit for a plastic bubble. Or, you can pick up an old road warrior, grab a bunch of vendor catalogs and build the nastiest resto-mod your money can buy. Take this vivid F-body for example. A proven bulletproof LS1 drivetrain, upgraded suspension, and unique interior, is a near perfect combination of vintage feel and cutting edge technologically. Forget some stuffy trailer queen that's constantly framed in little red ropes. And forget a “me-too” modern car that'll depreciate faster than its 5-year payoff. With this killer '68 Camaro, you can truly have your cake and eat it too!

BODYWORK/TRIM

If your goal is a clean custom, you can't go wrong starting out with first-generation Camaro lines. The extensive rotisserie restoration performed by Robby Carter at Camaro Muscle was finished in 2013, and takes the softer angles of the 1968 model and sculpts them into a modern jaw-dropper sure to command attention everywhere you go. A big part of the car's draw comes from its vibrant Burgundy paint. The paintwork shows well from all angles, accenting the arrow-straight panels beneath. For the most part those panels are the original pieces except for the new decklid and quarters, where the build team didn't have a choice but to replace. All pieces fit better than they did from the factory and make for a great first impression.

With its classic pony car proportions and modernist body panels the first generation Camaro is already an inherently good looking design. At the front of this killer '68 Camaro, a bright stainless grille hangs bright headlights above an arrow straight chrome bumper, and clear factory-equipped parking lights. Behind that grille, a modest hood scoop creates a fantastic look in front of the new glass. The absence of any emblems on this car works very well and lets features like the chrome wipers, door handles, and driver's side mirror really stand out. This '68 Camaro will draw plenty of looks with the color matched manual top up or down. At the back of the car, a traditional D80 decklid spoiler hangs an “RS” branded billet aluminum fuel cap; and a second wrap around chrome bumper sits above clear Rally Sport reverse lamps.

ENGINE

Under the hood, you'll find a modern LS1 power plant from Street & Performance in place of the carbureted old-tech iron small block. Dressed up in red flame coil covers, it's making notably more power than any original 350 would, and does it reliably and smoothly thanks to the wonders of factory fuel injection. The modern engine draws air through an aftermarket cold air intake topped with a unique filter element. Across from the pulleys, a large aluminum radiator keeps things cool with some help from dual electric fans. Around the engine, you'll see the inner fenders have been smoothed as well as the firewall. Lines have been routed neatly and most of the wiring remains tucked out of sight – no small feat with an LS1. Best of all, it starts instantly, idles perfectly even when it's ice cold, and everything works like it would in a brand new car—you just can't beat factory engineering for reliability.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Take a look under this F1 and a rock solid undercarriage looks back, that is painted to match the exterior, fresh lines, and new hardware throughout. In the center, one of GM's trusty 4L60E four-speed automatics hangs in place. The engine and transmission package alone totals over $15,000. From there, power is sent down the driveshaft to a stout 12-bolt rear axle. At either side of the driveline, extremely clean dual exhausts run the spent gasses through Magnaflow mufflers to create a fantastic noise. The front suspension has been upgraded to a rack and pinion style setup with tubular upper and lower control arms and adjustable coil-over shocks. At the rear of the car, the Camaro has been equipped with 3” lowering springs. Stopping power comes courtesy of 4-wheel power disc brakes, and in front of those upgraded brakes are 18” and 20” American Racing rims that have been wrapped in Venezia rubber.

INTERIOR

The interior is like the rest of the car—an artful blending of stock and aftermarket pieces that enhance and amplify what was already great about the early Camaros. It starts with two bucket seats that are covered in ultraleather that matches the exterior. Between the bucket seats is the classy Lokar shifter that controls the 4-speed automatic transmission. In front of the driver is the half-wrap alumuinum steering wheel and beyond that, Classic Instruments gauges show what exactly is happening in the burgundy engine bay. There is fresh, burgundy carpet with “heartbeat of America” stamped floor mats protecting the new carpet, and new door panels. The original HVAC controls have been replaced by those from Vintage Air, the radio uses what appears to be original knobs to disguise itself (and a secret audio stereo mounted in the trunk). Behind the front seats are two more additional seats the tie in the custom look of the interior. In the trunk, you'll also find more of the custom look and ultra-leather red.
