----------

During the dark days of '70s emissions systems, there were stalwart car guys. During the lackluster '80s performance scene, there were hardcore car guys. And even now, with ever increasing efficiency becoming the norm, there are still diehard car guys. No matter where the future leads, there will ALWAYS be lifestyle enthusiasts who build a culture around the rush of pushing cars to their extremes, and, unless you're one of us, it's something you'll never understand. So, what happens when a 'lifer' executes a dream build in which the sky is literally the limit? You get a mind numbing head turner like this 1972 Plymouth Satellite! The product of a high dollar, multi-year build, this incredible MoPar pro-tourer wraps a 500-horse 3G Hemi and a completely custom suspension in a custom leather interior and custom-mixed paint. If you're a fellow enthusiast who's looking to satisfy an unrelenting need to go fast and make a big statement, this magazine featured B-Body is just your style!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Completed in early 2012, this super clean curve carver is the direct result of what happens when a seasoned fabricator has an uncompromised vision, major dedication and access to a 6-figure bank account. See, the car's creator already owned a killer Charger that was buff enough to pull down sub 10-second passes on an NHRA-sanctioned drag strip, so he wanted to build a second car that was a bit milder and quite different. Enter this neon Plymouth, a project which quickly escalated from the restoration of a fun cruiser into the creation of an outrageous driver's car. For starters, this newly dubbed (S)atellite (T)ouring e(X)treme's mostly rust-free body was stripped and mounted to a custom rotisserie that ensured its floors would turn out every bit as nice as its vertical panels. Once that body was completely prepped, two inches of steel was welded to its rockers to simultaneously hide Ma MoPar's hasty pinch welds and provide a mean, buckled down stance. When those rockers were fully integrated, Matrix rose sealer was applied between hours of block sanding, and eventually coated in a thick layer of Matrix epoxy primer. When that primer cured, one-off Matrix Screamer Yellow paint, which had been mixed six times over, was stacked six coats deep under matte black war paint and modern “HEMI 6.1L” call-outs. And finally, nine coats of Matrix clear were followed by days of wet sanding and hours of tedious buffing. The result is one awesome Plymouth that, over the course of 2.5 years, was mostly completed by one dedicated gearhead in his own personal shop.

There's just something about a broad shouldered Plymouth that appeals to pretty much everyone with a pulse. Maybe it's their wow factor. Maybe it's the sense of strength they convey. Or maybe it's simply the surface development of their massive panels. Whatever the case may be, this custom Satellite carries all that classic Chrysler charm under a whole slew of details that highlight a clean and modern appearance. At the front of the car's mirror-like body, a prominent, '72 Road Runner grille hangs a colorful Road Runner mug between modern driving lights, bright halogen headlamps, a tucked '71 Road Runner bumper and a custom-fabricated chin spoiler. Above that grille, a custom Plymouth STX emblem and blacked out lanyards lead the eye to dark-tint glass that's framed in black stainless trim and color-keyed drip rails. At the sides of that emblem, shaved body panels prop small mechanical door poppers between matte black sport mirrors and a custom trunk spoiler. And at the back of those panels, a tucked '71 Road Runner bumper hangs a trick tag bracket between fresh taillights, a custom rear valence and custom stainless exhaust tips.

ENGINE

Hoist this Plymouth's fiberglass hood and you'll find 6.1 liters of naturally aspirated 3G Hemi bliss. Straight from the factory that popular SRT8 powerplant produces an impressive 425 horsepower and 420 lb./ft. of torque. And with the help of a custom tune by Hanahan, South Carolina's Bouchillon Performance Engineering, its performance transforms from wild to flat out wicked! Measuring in at roughly 372 cubic inches, the big mill uses a revised block, forged internals, lighter pistons and a cast aluminum intake to crank out a whopping 500 horsepower and 460 lb./ft. of torque. And best of all, that's 500 horsepower that'll fire up in any weather, last thousands of maintenance-free miles, and probably lay waste to any old school muscle car that's brave enough to stage a challenge! At the top of the modern monster, a traditional Air Grabber hood funnels wind in to a custom-fabricated cold air intake. At the sides of the motor, ceramic-coated TTI headers ensure the cylinders breathe as well as they eat. At the back of the motor, a custom Bouchillon Performance Engineering throttle pressure lever ensures the Gen Y mill communicates well with the car's Boomer-era A727 transmission. And at the front of the motor, a high performance Griffin radiator makes excellent use of two electric puller fans. Visually, the car's engine compartment comes together just as well as its highly modified exterior. The big V8's exceptionally clean install forgoes the current 'plastic dome of doom' trend in favor of yellow “HEMI 6.1L” branded fuel rail shrouds that actually resemble tall valve covers. Spotless fenders have been layered in familiar Screamer Yellow paint and bolted to a custom-fabricated shock tower brace. And everything, from the car's hidden Painless wiring and color-keyed Wilwood master cylinder to its custom-accented cowl and traditional orange block, is well-planned and professionally executed.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Launch this Satellite in to a lift-induced orbit and you'll find a fully finished undercarriage that's a product of professional grade customization and a whole roster of top notch pro-touring hardware. Behind the neo Hemi, a Hughes Performance A727 TorqueFlite produces great bite and hard launches. Out back, there's a stout Moser Sure Grip that's equipped with moderate, pavement pounding gears. That drivetrain rolls on a Reilly Motorsports triangulated 4-link that's equipped with QA-1 coil-over-shocks. Opposite that rear-half, a Reilly Motorsports AlterKtion front-clip centers manual rack-and-pinion steering between quality QA-1 shocks. Momentum comes courtesy of a custom, low-profile fuel tank that's been baffled and pressure tested to ensure the car's injected mill always has a steady supply of dino juice. Stops are supplied by beefy Wilwood calipers, which squeeze 12-inch drilled and slotted rotors in front of 11-inch drilled and slotted rotors. Exhaust rolls from the aforementioned TTI headers in to custom, 3-inch pipes that are complete with an X-shaped crossover, mean Flowmaster 40s and a smooth coat of hi-temp paint. And at the corners of the chassis, custom Boze Alloys spin two 225/45ZR18 Yokohamas and two 305/45R20 Yokohamas around satin-finished lips and Graphite Gray spokes.

INTERIOR

Open this B-Body's solid closing doors and take in a custom black interior that, as an astute combination of serious hardware and modern aesthetics, is the perfect place to spend jaunts like Hot Rod's famed Power Tour. The first thing you'll notice is a pair of GS-1 touring buckets, complete with high quality RCI harnesses, that are so supportive they'll have no problem living life 100 miles at a time. Between those seats, a custom console anchors a B&M Pro Bandit shifter between two cup holders and a remote controlled Sony CD player. At the base of that console, clean Auto Custom Carpets flooring rides between a modified foot pedal assembly, “Plymouth” branded mats and a thick layer of Dynamat insulation. At the sides of those rugs, custom, “6.1L HEMI” branded door panels flash color-keyed piping above suede kick cloth. At the front of those panels, a clean Just Dashes dash features snazzy white-face gauges and modern pushbutton ignition. Above that dash, a fresh headliner hangs a second custom console between a custom-fabricated mirror and a bright LED dome light. In front of the driver, a three-spoke Momo steering wheel spins a thick black rim around a shaved steering column. And at the back of the cockpit, a custom rear seat rides in front of a fully finished trunk that features a large MoPar insignia.
