----------

Like the 'tri-five' Chevys that came before it, the Chevelle was one of those cars that GM aced right out of the gate. Eventually, the marque became one of the strongest brands in automotive history. And at one point, featuring a full list of body styles, trim grades and engines, it literally embodied the 'custom built' nature that defined the muscle car era. The challenge then, was to build a car which optimized every aspect of that variety without being unlivable or boring. And whoever checked the options sheet for this investment grade Super Sport probably came as close as you can to having it all. First, this Chevy's drop top roof optimizes cruising. Secondly, its original LS5 big block is tame enough to be teamed with factory air conditioning, yet strong enough to kick some serious tail at the stoplight. Third, its original Muncie M22 'Rock Crusher' transmission is great for spirited driving. Fourth, its correct Cortez Silver on Black aesthetics are some of the best-looking visuals to adorn any Chevrolet. And finally, when you add all those desirable traits to the fact that, according to research by a Chevrolet expert this car is 1 of only 23 produced with its particular set of options, you get one incredible muscle car! If you're in the market for a top-notch example of one of the best Chevrolets ever produced, this exceptional convertible is just the car you've been looking for!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Assembled in Baltimore, Maryland and shipped to Jack Maxton Chevrolet in Worthington, Ohio, this awesome Chevelle convertible is the beneficiary of a recent nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration during which no expense was spared to return every square inch of its sculpted metal to better-than-new condition. After the car was completely stripped, and a few high quality replacement panels were welded up, its body was massaged into a laser straight profile in preparation for a correct coat of Cortez Silver base. Once that glossy pigment dried, it was appropriately battle dressed in requisite Tuxedo Black Super Sport Stripes and sealed in durable clear. And today, this top notch Chevelle is as a spectacular muscle car which combines the best aspects of big block Chevrolet performance with the gratuitous fun and old school style that only a classic drop-top can provide.

For the 1970 model year the Chevelle was given a squared off, masculine look which is still some of the most popular and beloved Chevrolet design language of all time. At the front of the car, a black, Super Sport split grille hangs pristine “Chevelle” and “SS” emblems between a body-width bumper, clear parking lamps and stainless-trimmed T3 headlights. Above that grille, stainless pin front a correct ZL2 hood that's finished with chrome “COWL INDUCTION” scripts. Behind that bonnet, Soft Ray glass props correctly shaded canvas over a full outfit of polished stainless trim. At the sides of the car, a correct driver's mirror reflects stainless wheel moldings, traditional door handles and aggressive “SS 454” fender badging. At the back of the car, a second body-width bumper hangs a fresh Super Sport inlay between bright taillights, a small “Chevelle BY CHEVROLET” badge and polished exhaust tips.

ENGINE

If you wanted a top of the line Chevelle in 1970, you had two options. You could order the LS6 and put up with a moody, uncivilized big block that didn't like running any accessories. Or you could order an LS5, like the one in this car, and have a nicely optioned, well-rounded performer that could still stomp virtually anything on the street. Either way you'd have an awesome car, but the irony of the situation is: LS5 cars are actually RARER than LS6 cars! Rolling out of the factory with an impressive 360 horsepower and a massive 500 lb./ft. of torque, this Chevelle's original, 454 cubic inch LS5 wears a correct 3963512 casting number, a March ( C ) 27th (27) of 1970 (0) casting date, a correct “CRT” suffix stamp and a correct 194056 partial VIN. At the top of that big engine, a functional cowl induction system feeds a single-snorkel air cleaner, which rides a correct Quadrajet 4-barrel and correct 3955287 intake. At the sides of that intake, mirrored valve covers loom familiar Packard TV R Suppression cables above correct 3964290 heads and fully restored exhaust manifolds. At the back of those tubes, a hot Pertronix Flame-Thrower distributor rides between a Pertronix Flame-Thrower coil and correct Delco Moraine brake booster. Cooling comes courtesy of a beefy radiator, which sends water past a shrouded 7-blade fan to a correct 3931065 water pump via reproduction GM hoses and a full set of tower clamps. Spark is supplied by a reproduction Delco battery, which is wired to a correct, 61-amp alternator that spins between an old school Frigidaire air compressor and familiar Harrison firewall components. And, naturally, this Chevy's Satin Black engine bay and Chevy Orange block are fully detailed and ready for show, from their replicated chalk marks to their showroom-spec decals.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Underneath this Chevelle, 'good-as-new' is the prevalent theme with over-restored floors hanging a super slick coat of Gloss Black paint over a highly detailed chassis. Behind the stout big block, an original Muncie M22 'Rock Crusher' wears a matching 194056 partial VIN and Muncie (P) M22 ( C ) assembled on April (D) 21st (21), 1970 (0) build stamp in front of a correct 3925661 casting number. That gearbox funnels power to a “CRV” branded 12-bolt that's equipped with a posi-traction differential and requisite 3.31 gears. That killer drivetrain rolls on a completely restored F41 Sport Suspension. Correct power steering combines with correct power front disc and power rear drum brakes to provide greatly improved turns and modern car stops. At the center of the car, aluminized exhaust pipes center factory replacement mufflers in front of correct resonators. At the corners of the car, 14-inch Super Sport Wheels spin F70-14 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports around correct Super Sport center caps. And everything, from this Chevy's fresh stainless fuel tank to its correct 1108418 starter, is completely detailed and ready to roll!

INTERIOR

The correct Black vinyl in this Chevelle looks fantastic wrapped in bright silver panels. Front bucket and rear bench seats were rebuilt with fresh foam and new seat covers, and blend seamlessly with the car's clean carpet and rugged floor mats. In front of those seats, a traditional Super Sport dash hangs deluxe telemetry next to a correct Delco AM/FM radio and controls for correct factory air conditioning. Below that dash, a common console frames a polished Muncie floor shifter, that's complete with a black cue ball knob. Opposite that shifter, fade-free door panels center pristine stainless trim and fresh chrome handles around straight and pliable armrests. In front of the driver, a satin-spoke Chevrolet Rally Wheel spins a cushioned rim around a factory tilt steering column. And behind the cockpit, a fully restored trunk includes a correct mat, a full-size spare tire, a correct jack and correct decklid decals.
