By the early '60s, Pontiac, GM's 'lowly companion marque', was experiencing a huge spike in prestige and popularity. Eventually the GTO, an octane-infused performance package turned brand halo dynamo, became one of the hottest names in the automotive landscape. Today, when you take a close look at classics like this first-class drop-top, it's not hard to understand why. The car's retractable roof optimizes athletic backroad jaunts. Its hot Pontiac 400 is tame enough to cruise the highway, yet strong enough to own the stoplight. And its impeccable restoration mixes rich Nightwatch and Parchment aesthetics with acute attention to detail. HISTORY/CONDITION

According to this GTO's current owner, the car's known history started in 1972 when it began a 20-year stay with one family. The first half of that tenure was spent in the hot Florida sun, while the latter part involved a stay here in North Carolina. In 1992, the car met its next owner, a Richmond resident who stored it in a lean-to as a non-running project. Fast forward eight years, when the turn of the century brought another turnover in ownership. That enthusiast, this Pontiac's current owner, stored the car for roughly eight more years before commissioning a 2-year, ground-up restoration that was completed by GTO specialist Dwight Banks. And in 2010, this Poncho left Dwight's Waynesville, North Carolina shop sporting fresh Nightwatch Blue 2-stage that, as of this writing, has traversed only 500 miles of blacktop.

At the front of that classy pigment, a flashy dual-port grille founds ornate parking lamps and a prominent “G T O” emblem between a wide bumper and stacked headlights. At the top of the car, a broad hood centers a small scoop and optional tachometer between a monochromatic arrowhead and stainless-trimmed glass that's sealed under tight vinyl. At the sides of the car, brilliant pinstripes and sporty GTO emblems add a little sport, while polished rockers, traditional door handles and a correct driver's mirror add a little function. And out back, a stainless-trimmed valance hangs louver-style taillights between a second body-width bumper, a fourth “GTO” script and polished exhaust tips.

ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN

Pop the hood and you'll find 400 cubic inches of date-correct V8 that, during its rebuild, was bored .030 over, fitted with TRW pistons, hooked to MSD ignition and topped with hardened valve seats. That stout V8 spins power to a tough Muncie 4-speed, which twists torque to a rebuilt 12-bolt that's finished with friendly, 3.31 gears. At the sides of that rock-solid drivetrain, a fully rebuilt suspension is complete with quick-ratio power steering and upgraded power front disc and rear drum brakes. A buff soundtrack rumbles through Mandrel-bent pipes that connect correct manifolds with Pypes Violator mufflers. And muscle meets the pavement through stainless-trimmed Rally IIs, which spin 225/70R14 BF Goodrich Silvertown Radial redlines around cool PMD center caps.

INTERIOR

Under this GTO's power-operated top you'll find a striking Parchment interior that was installed during the car's detailed restoration. Front and center, factory bench and bucket seats wrap bright chrome trim around fresh vinyl covers. Those hides look great behind a wood-trimmed dash that integrates rebuilt telemetry above a correct pushbutton radio. On the floor, new carpet anchors a simple Hurst shifter and stylish, wood-trimmed console between GTO-themed floor mats. And in front of the driver, a Custom Sport Steering Wheel spins a faux wood rim around a Teal, Pontiac-branded horn button.
