The beloved GTO is a direct result of what happens when a renegade car division that's ran by busted-knuckle gearheads defies corporate culture, 'borrows' Ferrari's most coveted name and stages an octane-fueled war against crosstown rivals. It offered buyers the very real opportunity to walk in to a Pontiac showroom and, with the flip of a checkbook, purchase a one-way ticket to hot style and big performance. Today, classics like this cool resto-mod, featuring a massaged big block, a tough Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed and head-turning aesthetics, are perfect cruisers for enthusiasts who want to prowl the show field and burn up the streets. And, if you missed out 40 years ago, it's your well-deserved chance to walk in to our showroom, sign a few papers and relive the glory of the muscle car era!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Polished and ready to roll thanks to a body-off, rotisserie restoration that was completed in 2013, this coupe wears a solid profile that was stripped, patched, fitted with a fresh passenger's quarter and bolted to a brand new front-clip that's finished with a Tamraz's fiberglass nose. Naturally, that clean fuselage is coated in bright Orbit Orange 2-stage and dressed in a full array of Judge war paint. At the front of that pigment, a prominent grille centers a legendary “G T O” script between clean parking lamps, stainless-trimmed headlights and a tasteful chin spoiler. Behind that grille, an appropriately labeled Ram Air Hood fronts fresh glass, which is cased in polished drip rails and polished stainless frames. Beneath that greenhouse, color-keyed mirrors reflect traditional door handles. And at the back of the car, an Orbit Orange bumper hangs stainless-trimmed taillights above polished exhaust tips.
ENGINE
Pop the hood and you'll find a balanced and fully rebuilt 455 that utilizes a .030 overbore to create roughly 475 horsepower. At the top of that Turquoise mill, a K&N X-Stream air cleaner funnels wind in to a Holley 750 double pumper, which rides an aluminum Edelbrock intake. That air/fuel mixture floods ported 96 heads, which hang hardened valve seats over forged rods, forged pistons and a hydraulic, flat-tappet cam. That assembly gets sparked by a modern MSD distributor, which sequences fire between an MSD Blaster 2 coil and loomed Taylor Spiro Pro plug wires. Coated Doug's headers make quick work of spent gases. At the front of those tubes, a billet March accessory drive spins a rebuilt alternator and spry power steering. Cooling comes courtesy of a beefy Griffin radiator, which fronts a duo of SPAL puller fans. And items like Summit fuel lines, a billet thermostat housing, stylish valve covers and polished breathers mix great looks with great performance!
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
When the engine jumps to life, it twists torque through a tweaked Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed, which spins power to a dressed 12-bolt pumpkin that's built with smooth, 3.31 gears. That drivetrain pushes a fully restored chassis that was bolted together with polyurethane bushings, Detroit Speed lowering springs and Classic Performance Products drop spindles. Turns come courtesy of an AGR quick-ratio steering box. A CPP brake booster jolts four CPP calipers, which squeeze a quartet of drilled and slotted rotors. There's a 2.5-inch, Mandrel-bent exhaust system that growls through an H-shaped crossover and Flowmaster 40 Series mufflers. And at the corners of the car's over-restored floors, stylish Rushforth Night Trains lap 255/45ZR18 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs in front of 295/45ZR18 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs.
INTERIOR
Between the doors, things are clean and traditional thanks to a full kit from Legendary Auto Interiors. Firm Rally seats frame a dressed console, which is centered on a factory shifter. A familiar dash hangs a vintage Delco radio and snazzy Auto Meter telemetry behind a striking combination of engine-turned and carbon fiber surfacing. A bit of modern convenience takes the form of power-operated windows. And the driver guides a monochromatic Formula Steering Wheel around a color-keyed, tilting column.
