Numbers Matching Frame Off Restored Corvette Split Window 327/360 V8 Fuelie 4spd
You can ask pretty much any Corvette guy what the paramount vintage Vette is and he'll probably say “Sting Ray”. When you counter with words like “327” and “fuel injection”, the phrases “ultimate” and “blue chip” become a natural settling point. And investors clearly agree, since prices on mid-year Chevys remain solid year after year despite the state of the economy. A splendid candidate for any serious collector, this registry-listed coupe is an 'early build' C2 that, thanks to acute restoration, wraps correct Sebring Silver paint and plush leather trim around a numbers-matching drivetrain. Looking for some exclusive Americana that'll never go out of style? Give your friends at RK Motors Charlotte a call and experience the “ultimate” Corvette!
BODYWORK/TRIM
During its comprehensive, nut-and-bolt restoration, this solid Sting Ray was entirely disassembled and carefully stripped of its dull, original pigment. Once that prep was complete, an incredibly solid fuselage was massaged straight. As that crisp profile featured better-than-factory alignment, a correct coat of Sebring Silver base was sealed in glossy clear. When that clear dried, labor-intensive hours were spent buffing a spectacular shine. And today, one close look at our high-resolution photos reveals a handsome payoff in the form of one of the best Corvettes on the planet!
Thanks to a renewed dedication to motorsports, and heavy influence from the original Mako Shark concept car, the second-generation Corvette sports a very athletic appearance. At the front of the car, a low-slung nose tucks a stainless-trimmed grille behind thin 'razor blade' bumpers and bright, bullet-style parking lamps. Above that grille, folding headlights hide early production fiberglass buckets beneath a familiar cross-flag emblem. Those flags lead a 1963-exclusive hood, which fronts like-new glass that's trimmed in polished wipers and stainless frames. At the sides of that glass, a sleek profile hangs colorful Fuel Injection badging between traditional door handles, beefy rocker guards and a stylish bowtie mirror. That mirror reflects a sloped deck, which seats a factory antenna next to a cross-flag-branded fuel filler that's complete with an early production, roller-type catch. And at the back of the car, two more 'razor blade' bumpers frame a bright Sting Ray emblem, traditional stainless exhaust tips and clean factory taillights.
ENGINE
Tilt the car's lightweight hood and you'll find an original, 327 cubic inch small block that hangs a correct 3782870 casting number between a correct RF suffix code, a matching 105147 partial VIN and a November (K) 19th (19), 1962 (2) casting date. Holding the title of “World's most powerful, naturally aspirated single-cam V8” until the debut of Chevrolet's 2001 Corvette Z06, this impressive small block utilizes wide-bore casting, a forged steel crank, forged pistons and a hot cam to turn stout 11 to 1 compression into an advertised 360 horsepower. At the top of the spry mill, an AC-branded air tube funnels wind in to a correct Rochester injection system, which is sequenced to an AC fuel filter via clean stainless fluid lines. Below that juice box, a familiar Winters intake perfectly complements finned Corvette valve covers. At the back of that plane, chrome-cased ignition shoots spark past cast exhaust manifolds via stainless-sleeved wires. At the front of those tubes, a Harrison-branded radiator circulates coolant through pliable hoses and authentic tower clamps. And details like a correct alternator, a Harrison overflow tank and a reproduction Delco battery ensure this Chevy runs every bit as good as it looks.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Peer under this well-planted coupe and you'll find a Satin Black chassis that's straight, solid and ready to pound the pavement. The L84 sends power to an original Borg Warner 4-speed, which hangs a correct T10 casting number opposite a matching 105147 partial VIN. That transmission aligns with a correct “CD" branded rear end, assembled on November 16th, 1962, that twists a posi-traction differential around big, 3.70 gears. At the front of that driveline, a double A-arm suspension employs an authentic manual steering rack. Opposite that rack, a transverse leaf suspension does an excellent job of increasing grip. In the middle of the car's bare floors, aluminized, true-dual exhaust shuttles spent gases through rear mounted mufflers and polished stainless tips. At the corners of the car's suspension, correct, power-assisted drums mix firm stops with solid handling. And all that fully sorted hardware rolls on handsome alloy turbines, which spin 6.70-15 Goodyear Custom Super Cushion whitewalls around ornate spinners.
INTERIOR
Slip in to this Vette's mostly correct interior and settle on one of its comfortable buckets. Those seats are the same shade they left the factory, however their surfaces were upgraded from vinyl to leather during the car's detailed restoration. From the driver's perch, stock gauges bleed onto their bordering panels in a march toward a center-mount clock, a desirable Wonderbar radio and an early production fiberglass glovebox door. Below that clock, like-new carpet floats wide sills and heavy-duty floor mats at the sides of a small console that anchors factory power windows behind a short shifter. And in front of the driver, a satin-spoke steering wheel laps a classy cross-flag emblem.
