Description

By this point you've probably realized RK Motors Charlotte employs quite a few diehard Pontiac fans. After all, RKM does attract people who bleed 100 octane racing fuel, and Pontiac, at its core, was fully dedicated to selling outrageous metal to serious gearheads. So naturally, we can't help but melt like a hot tire in a staging lane when we find an awesome classic like this documented, 617-mile Turbo Trans Am. Fully optioned and incredibly preserved, this pristine Pace Car is 1 of only 1,555 TTAs produced and, by extension, 1 of only 1,555 Trans Ams fitted with V6 power. And whether you're looking for a unique collector car that has some serious upside, or just a choice ride to cruise to Radwood, it's your chance to become the king of cool!

HISTORY/CONDITION

Capitalizing on two decades of excellent sales, and record promotion of its reinvigorated branding, Pontiac kicked off the Trans Am's 20th model year with a replica of their coveted Indianapolis 500 Pace Car. In addition to functional and, by Pontiac standards, conservative aesthetics, the car featured a bolder version of Buick's buff turbocharged 3800 V6. And, like its GNX predecessor, the Turbo Trans Am punched way above its class, clocking 60 MPH in 4.6 seconds on the way to an artificially limited 162 MPH top speed.

Perfected by Prototype Automotive Services, the same company that birthed GMC's insane Syclones and Typhoons, this clean Pontiac's factory-accurate appearance is simply spectacular. The car's geometric body has, as suggested by CARFAX, been pampered and stored its entire 29 years. And, based on appearance, everything from its original paint to its subdued call-outs looks as good as the day it rolled out of the showroom. Speaking of bolt-ons, the Turbo Trans Am package borrowed much of its pony car chic from the delightfully factious Trans Am Gran Turismo Americano. At the front of this coupe, a straight GTA bumper hangs bright GTA fog lamps beneath an ornate 20th Anniversary header emblem. At the sides of that emblem, “PONTIAC” branded headlights fold neatly under a functional GTA hood. At the sides of that hood, functional GTA skirts found correct Indianapolis Motor Speedway badging under painted mirrors, color-keyed door handles and correct, dealer-installed “TURBO TRANS AM” badging. Above those insignias, optional T-tops cap factory-tint glass and stylish 20th Anniversary B-pillar emblems. At the back of the car, a GTA decklid centers an aerodynamic spoiler over polished exhaust tips and themed GTA taillights. And, in case you're wondering, this Pontiac's original door and windshield decals ARE included with our sale.

ENGINE

The heart of any muscle car is its engine, and this Firebird's bold “TURBO” monikers are not to be taken lightly. Introduced as the Fireball, and eventually renamed the 3800, Buick's stalwart, 231 cubic inch V6 utilized turbos, superchargers and continuous improvements to remain one of General Motors' core powerplants for close to 50 years. In addition to compounding tweaks accrued during the life of the Grand National series, the original 3800 behind this coupe's stock car-like bumper benefits from significant mechanical improvements. For starters, Pontiac bolted the reliable Garret turbo found in Buick's Grand National to the larger, 12-fin intercooler found in Buick's GNX. That induction feeds TTA-specific heads, which, in addition to addressing packaging issues, achieve better flow than traditional Grand National units. Under those heads, a cross drilled crank pushes dished pistons to create turbo-friendly 8 to 1 compression. A Bosch 237 fuel pressure regulator nicely complements stainless headers. And high performance engine calibration ensures everything plays well together. To preserve Team Corvette's bragging rights, the engine is officially rated at 250 horsepower and 340 lb./ft. of torque. However, as confirmed by blistering performance tests peppered through several periodicals, the mill actually produces close to 300 horsepower and 400 lb./ft. of torque. And that's before factoring any easy aftermarket upgrades. Presently, this Poncho's low-mileage powerplant is 100% stock inside and out, featuring lucid ancillaries that are barely broken in. Everything, from its finned valve covers to its correct 25526109 casting number, appears to be in showroom-fresh condition. And one glance at our pictures reinforces the fact that this 'bird certainly hasn't seen anything more than carefully planned miles.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Under this third generation Trans Am, a trusty Turbo-Hydramatic 200 4-speed spins a familiar 10-bolt axle. Under that first-class drivetrain, a PAS-tuned WS6 Suspension makes excellent use of heavy duty sway bars, upgraded shocks and upgraded struts. Unrestrained, TTAs were probably legitimate 180 MPH sports coupes. But the factory knew the limitations of the Trans Am's transmission, and wisely chose to reign in the fun long before peak velocity. Speaking of brakes and the like, Pace Cars came standard with GM's proven 1LE Brake Package, which bundles quick-change pads with 12-inch, Police-spec rotors and power-assisted Corvette calipers. Modern power steering makes cornering easy and turning a cinch. At the corners, attractive GTA alloys spin WS6 center caps inside 245/50ZR16 Goodyear Eagle ZR50s. And, aesthetically, the bottom of this Pontiac is clean and correct, from its baffled fuel tank all the way to its high performance exhaust.

INTERIOR

When it comes to interior décor, Pontiac's '80s team was firing on all eight cylinders. While some might consider this coupe's gold embellishments a tad overkill, and its horsepower rating relatively modest, there's no disputing the beauty of its design. Naturally, there's a roster of requisite convenience features, including power windows, power locks, climate control, Cruise Control and a tilt steering column. Optional leather buckets front GTA and TTA-exclusive split rear seats. Opposite those seats, delightfully '80s gauges, complete with a small boost inset, inhabit a blocky dash that's free of warps and cracks. Below that dash, a factory console frames a short T-handle shifter. In front of the driver, a leather-wrapped Sport Steering Wheel cages redundant audio controls. And behind the passengers, a shaded hatch seems big enough to abet weekend travel.
