National Award Winning Restored 442 Convertible 455 V8 Auto A/C Viking Blue
It's a real shame that so many enthusiasts overlook Oldsmobile when shopping for an awesome classic. Big block Chevelles and aggressively styled GTOs seem to be naturals when it comes to muscle car wish lists. But, in reality, GM's 'more proper' divisions created some of the nastiest stoplight warriors ever unleashed on American streets. Oldsmobile, the General's humble technology division, certainly did its fair share to glorify the rise of Detroit. And this national award-winning drop-top is a prime example of their much lauded 'bar brawler in a tuxedo' sales mentality. Featuring a numbers-matching drivetrain, special-order paint and a professional, nut-and-bolt restoration, this highly-optioned 442 is one of the coolest A-Bodies on the planet! And if you're looking for a solid, show-ready classic that'll turn heads and bring home trophies, it's your round-trip rocket ride to the moon!
VIKING BLUE DRIVES UNDER CLEAR BLUE SKIES
In early 2018, this awesome Olds debuted from a documented, ground-up restoration that complemented a mostly-solid fuselage with new fenders and a small floor patch. In late 2018, the car earned First Place at the Oldsmobile Club of America Nationals, and received an official invite to the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals. And today, this taut 442 rolls as an impeccable classic that balances correct Viking Blue 2-stage under fresh pinstripes and a correct White top.
The car's clean lines kick off with a 442-specific grille, which centers monochromatic “442” lettering between stainless-trimmed T3s, clear parking lamps and an original bumper that's been professionally re-chromed. At the top of that grille, a W25 Fresh Air Hood anchors chrome lanyards in front of a factory-tint greenhouse that's cleared with recessed wipers and trimmed in mirrored stainless. At the sides of that hood, traditional GM handles and color-keyed Sport Mirrors perfectly complement clean marker lamps, dent-free wheel rings and slick “442” fender emblems. And at the back of the car, a “442” branded decklid shades a second re-chromed bumper, silver-trimmed taillights and correct, trumpeted exhaust tips.
NUMBERS-MATCHING POWER
Under the Ram Air Hood you'll find 455 cubic inches of original Rocket V8 that hangs a correct 396021F casting number over a matching 111217 partial VIN. Stomp the throttle and a correct Quadrajet 4-barrel mixes juice from leak-free fuel lines with wind from a familiar W-30 air cleaner. At the back of that intake, a traditional points distributor feeds fire through proven Packard TV R Suppression Cables, which snake around correct “E” heads and stamped and painted valve covers. Below those covers, ceramic-coated exhaust manifolds shoot charred dinosaurs in to big, true-dual pipes. The professionally rebuilt mill is rated at 395 dyno-proven horsepower and 500 lb./ft. of rock-crushing torque to the car's flywheel. Aesthetically, familiar plastic fenders and Metallic Blue block skin look fantastic against the car's glossy body. And there's a roster of high quality ancillaries that includes a Delco Energizer battery, a Delco Moraine brake booster and an original, re-cored radiator.
NUMBERS-MATCHING DRIVETRAIN
This convertible's hot big block fronts an original Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed, which wears a correct “70 OG” assembly tag and a matching 111217 partial VIN. That proven transmission sends power to a date-correct 12-bolt, which hides a posi-traction differential and 3.08 gears under a cool W27 inspection cover. That smooth driveline rides a familiar heavy-duty suspension, which, along with the car's chassis, was fully powder-coated during the body-off reboot. Solid stops are provided by correct power front disc and rear drum brakes. Turns come courtesy of correct power steering. At the center of the floors, an aluminized exhaust system funnels spent gases through buff turbo mufflers. And everything rolls on Oldsmobile Super Stock IIs, which spin G70-14 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports around rocket-branded center caps.
OPTIONS GALORE
Inside this impressive classic you'll find a correct Blue interior that, in the realm of performance-focused muscle cars, is both classy and upscale. At the center of the cockpit, stainless-trimmed seats offer 4-way power adjustment for the car's driver. Between those thrones, a correct console frames a Hurst dual gate shifter. In front of that island, a wood-trimmed dash hangs retrofitted Rally Pack gauges above correct factory air conditioning, a correct AM/FM radio and a correct tape deck. At the sides of that ledge, ornate door panels front correct power windows. And in front of the driver, a correct Sport Steering Wheel laps a correct tilting column.
PROVENANCE
In addition to an original Build Sheet that confirms this handsome Olds's status as a real-deal 442, a simple decode of the car's VIN and Cowl Tag confirms the accuracy of its restoration.
