Documented Frame Off Restored Chevelle SS Convertible 396/350hp V8 4 speed
1970 was the pinnacle of the American muscle car movement. Too much performance just wasn't enough, and user friendliness was exchanged for a healthy combination of style, attitude and danger. Just take a look at this numbers-matching, fully documented Chevelle Super Sport, a car that wraps butch styling around serious big block power and the kind of hardware that's become the stuff of legend. With its ample and inexpensive parts supply, ease of ownership and classic, all-American appeal, THIS is the top dog muscle car that every octane-fueled gearhead wants to park in their garage. And now, thanks to your like-minded friends at RK Motors Charlotte, you can drive one home in better-than-new condition! Want to be admired by your neighbors, envied by your car club, and loathed by the kid at the local stoplight, pick up the phone and pick up your new Chevelle!
GREEN WITH DROP-TOP
Spending the first 42 years of its life in the hands of one dedicated enthusiast, this awesome Chevelle is the beneficiary of a ground-up restoration during which no expense was spared to return every square inch of its sculpted metal to better-than-new condition. Once the car was stripped of all 133K of its well-stewarded miles, a few high quality replacement panels were welded to an otherwise straight profile. Naturally, that massaged profile was resprayed in correct Green Mist pigment, which looks especially dynamic under a correct battledress of Tuxedo Black Super Sport Stripes. And today, clean, confident and ruthlessly classy, this spectacular muscle car combines the best aspects of big block Chevrolet performance with the gratuitous fun and old school style that only a classic drop-top can provide.
For 1970, the facelifted Chevelle moved an impressive 634K units. Not only did that high-profile success earn GM big money, it also solidified the nameplate as part of Chevy's oft romanticized 'golden era'. At the front of this A-Body, a black Super Sport grille hangs pristine “Chevelle” and “SS” emblems between a body-width bumper, clear parking lamps and stainless-trimmed T3 headlights. Above that grille, stainless pins front a correct ZL2 hood that's finished with chrome “COWL INDUCTION” scripts. Behind that bonnet, fresh glass props correct, power-operated canvas over a full outfit of polished stainless trim. At the sides of that flash, a correct driver's mirror reflects stainless wheel moldings, traditional door handles and ornate “SS 396” fender badging. And at the back of the car, a second body-width bumper hangs a fresh Super Sport inlay between bright taillights, a small “Chevelle BY CHEVROLET” badge and polished exhaust tips.
PROVEN BIG BLOCK POWER
Gaze in to the Satin Black engine bay and you'll find 396 cubic inches of original Chevrolet big block that follows a correct “CTX” assembly stamp with a correct 3969854 casting number and a matching 178168 partial VIN. That tough mill balances a painted and decaled air cleaner on a storied Rochester Quadrajet carburetor. That rebuilt carb rides a correct iron intake, which feeds iron Chevrolet heads that are capped by polished valve covers. At the back of those heads, an original points distributor jolts loomed Packard TV R Suppression cables. Below those cables, restored exhaust manifolds funnel spent gases in to throaty, true-dual pipes. At the front of those tubes, factory pulleys spin a rebuilt alternator opposite factory power steering. In front of those pulleys, a marked and decaled radiator circulates coolant through pliable GM hoses and old school tower clamps. And the completely overhauled big block's highly authentic, restoration-fresh appeal is reinforced by details like a correct Delco Moraine brake booster and a Delco-topped battery.
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE DRIVE
Under this Chevelle, 'good-as-new' is the prevalent theme with solid floors hanging a super slick coat of Satin Black paint over a highly detailed chassis. Behind the stout big block, an original Muncie 4-speed wears a matching 178168 partial VIN and Muncie (P) M20 (A) assembled on March (C) 5th (05), 1970 (0) build stamp in front of a correct 3925661 casting number. That gearbox funnels power to a familiar 12-bolt axle. That sorted drivetrain rides a completely restored F41 Sport Suspension. Correct power steering combines with correct power front disc and rear drum brakes to provide improved handling and greatly improved stops. At the center of the car, aluminized exhaust pipes align factory replacement mufflers with correct resonators. At the corners of the chassis, 14-inch Super Sport Wheels spin F70-14 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports around polished trim rings and correct SS center caps. And everything, from the car's Chevy Orange oil pan to its fresh stainless fuel tank, is completely detailed and ready to roll!
OR, MAYBE IT'S ALL ABOUT THE RIDE
This Chevelle's correct Black vinyl looks fantastic wrapped in glossy green panels! Front bucket and rear bench seats, rebuilt during the restoration, blend seamlessly with the car's clean carpet and monochromatic floor mats. In front of those seats, a traditional Super Sport dash hangs deluxe telemetry next to a correct, optional stereo. Below that dash, a silver-trimmed console frames a polished Hurst shifter. Opposite that shifter, fade-free door panels trim pliable armrests in fresh chrome handles and pristine stainless trim. In front of the driver, a factory steering wheel laps a factory tilt column. And behind the cockpit, a fully restored trunk includes a correct mat, a full-size spare tire, a correct jack and correct decklid decals.
PROVENANCE
As Chevelle enthusiasts, we all know it can be very difficult to prove the merit of a true Super Sport. But one look at this drop-top's VIN and original Protect-O-Plate dispels any inkling of falsification.
