By now, we all probably know the kind of incredible performance Corvettes are capable of. Introduced way back in 1953, and officially known as America's first sports car, the marque has spent the better part of the last 20 years embarrassing much more expensive competitors. So then, what makes a great collector Vette? Well, from a standpoint of all-around performance and appearance, this 50th Anniversary Edition is a solid bet. Driven only 890 miles in the hands of only two owners, it wraps analog athleticism in spectacular Shale and Metallic Red aesthetics. And if you enjoy mind-bending performance that's spiced with a menacing touch of legendary motorsports heritage, it's your chance to claim a potential future classic!

GOOD AS GOLD

With less than 1K miles on its bright digital odometer, this razor-sharp rag-top is a well-maintained garage queen that's assembly line perfect in virtually every way. The car's spotless Anniversary Red Metallic 2-stage gracefully dances between rich and vivid, depending on the light. Lightweight body panels display precise fit and excellent finish under exclusive Shale cloth that functions well and seals great. It's very unlikely any of those forms, backed by a clean CARFAX Report, have felt anything more aggressive than a soft detailing cloth. And when that level of ownership is combined with Bowling Green's top-notch build quality, it creates one seriously capable sports car that'll show well and absolutely blister the road!

SMALL BLOCK POWER

Cosmetic appeal aside, this Corvette remains a high performance neck snapper. Lift its sculpted hood and you'll find GM's potent Generation III small block: a forerunner to virtually all the technology still featured in Chevrolet sports cars. Utilizing aluminum construction, flat top pistons and coil-near-plug ignition, the efficient mill is conservatively rated at 350 horsepower and 375 lb./ft. of Kansas-flat torque. And despite consistently delivering track-blistering performance, it passes all emissions tests, drives like a commuter car and still pulls 26 MPG on the highway! Aesthetically, everything on this LS1, from its pristine wiring to its pliable belts and traditional fuel rail covers, reflects a history of fastidious maintenance. Twist the key and the cylinders rumble to life, sending their rhythmic notes through subtle factory exhaust. And with one tap of the throttle, the engine zings smoothly toward redline.

GOOD BONES

Like most Corvettes, this convertible strikes a perfect balance between bone shaking firm and Lexus soft, while providing a level of grip that would be right at home under a purpose-built track car. Slide under the svelte drop-top and you'll find a hydroformed chassis that unites a well-maintained suspension with optional Magnetic Selective Ride Control and GM's second generation of Active Handling. In traditional Corvette fashion, that suspension consists of double A-arms up front and a transverse leaf out back. At the corners, giant, vented rotors are clamped by multi-piston calipers that sport bold “CORVETTE” scripts. Power flows through a proven Tremec 6-speed to snappy 3.42 gears. Spent gases are mitigated by a well-mannered, factory exhaust system. And rolling stock consists of Warm Nickel Metallic blades that spin 245/45ZR17 Goodyear Eagle F1s in front of 275/40ZR18 Goodyear Eagle F1s.

CONSERVATIVE AND CLASSY

Take a look inside this Chevy and you'll find an impressive leather interior that's clean and to the point. All the car's plastics are fresh, cohesive and exhibit none of the trademark cracking displayed by most '90s 'big window' rigs. In the dash, easy to read telemetry hovers between an optional Head Up Display, dual-zone climate control and a standard Delco head unit. The power-adjustable, Corvette-branded buckets are extremely comfortable for long hauls. Between those seats, a leather-wrapped shifter highlights a simple console, which surfs like-new carpet that displays no thinning or staining. At the sides of that carpet, clean door panels flow the dash's sedate color scheme through large Bose speakers. In front of the driver, a pristine steering wheel laps a tilt and telescoping column. Behind the passengers, a fully carpeted trunk provides adequate room for an overnight get-away. And naturally, all the luxuries you'd expect are present and accounted for, including power windows, power door locks, Cruise Control, Remote Keyless Entry and GM's optional Memory Package.

PROVENANCE

One of only 7,547 50th Anniversary drop-tops ever assembled, this low-mileage Vette began life at Jack Schmitt Chevrolet in O'Fallon, Illinois. Here's a detailed look at the car's original Window Sticker:
