Description

As enthusiasts, we all know the true appeal of owning classic cars is expressing our own individuality through purpose-built machines that are rolling extensions of everything which defines us. And whether that means constructing a canvas from the ground up or taking a solid foundation and adding just enough detail for perfection, the hobby certainly has no shortage of ideas, inspiration or talent. That said, if you've been a long-term car junkie, chances are you find yourself a bit jaded. And no matter how spectacular everyday classics are, you probably have a hard time rekindling the wide-eyed excitement that sparked your decades-old addiction. So, what does a seasoned gearhead do when he loses his appetite for striped Camaros and High Impact MoPars? He snatches up a super cool rarity like this sweet Ford Cabriolet! Built to turn heads and drop jaws, this striking drop-top wraps a spry Ford small block and stalwart Ford AOD in solid Ford steel and plush leather trim. Want to be the center of attention wherever you go? Your classic awaits!

HENRY FORD STEEL

Based on appearance, this Ford's smooth and solid steel was super clean before its detailed restoration even began. Nonetheless, that metal was subjected to a deep massage that followed a full strip with laser-straight lines and a spectacular coat of bright red 2-stage. And today, this drop-top rolls as a banner showpiece that celebrates the fusion of some of Ford's greatest design work with some of the best modern technology money can buy.

When it comes to details, this well-executed classic strikes an excellent balance between Ford's hallmark Roaring Twenties aesthetic and the monochromatic style of traditional hot rodding. At the front of the car, a polished grille centers a traditional “V8” emblem between a polished bumper, polished Twolite headlights and a classy “Ford” badge. Behind that branding, a polished Greyhound leads a steel hood, which fronts chrome-trimmed glass that's seated in a custom, body-matched frame. That frame, pierced by a small, custom-mount wiper, meets a tailored cloth top that's finished with a quality glass backlite. At the sides of the car, trick suicide doors hang elegant mirrors and traditional handles between matted running boards and snazzy cowl lamps. And at the back of those boards, a second polished bumper frames a billet fuel cap, polished Blue Dot Duolamps and a plush Rumble Seat.

POWER BY FORD

Tilt this 40B's hood and you'll find 302 cubic inches of Blue Oval bliss. At the top of that Jet Black block, a coated Magneti Marelli carburetor rides between a polished air cleaner and a polished intake. At the front of that intake, a familiar MSD distributor anchors loomed Taylor plug wires between a polished breather, an MSD Blaster SS coil and polished Ford Racing valve covers. Below those covers, ceramic-coated block hugger headers funnel spent gases in to large-diameter exhaust pipes. Opposite those pipes, billet serpentine components spin a polished alternator and a polished AC compressor. And in front of those components, an aluminum radiator leads a large SPAL puller fan. As you can see, the clean engine bay wears matching 2-stage skin. And all the mill's ancillary components, from its braided fluid lines and trick transmission stick to its Lokar throttle linkage and billet brake reservoir, appear to be high quality aftermarket pieces.

TIMELESS STYLE, MODERN MANNERS

Every good custom has a solid foundation. This classic's crisp dynamics begin with a sturdy aftermarket chassis that's finished with an integrated driveshaft hoop. Inside that hoop, a color-keyed driveshaft spans the difference between a proven Ford AOD 4-speed and a polished, Corvette-style axle. That axle utilizes polished half-shafts to push a fully independent rear-clip, which is built from polished control arms and quality Aldan coil-overs. Opposite that clip, an independent front-half hangs manual rack-and-pinion steering behind more polished control arms and a second set of Aldan coil-overs. That suspension stops when polished, power-assisted calipers, mounted in-board at the rear, squeeze a combination of drilled, slotted and vented rotors. At the center of the floor, polished and Mandrel-bent exhaust vibrates polished turbo mufflers. At the corners of the chassis, aggressive Billet Specialties wheels spin 215/40R17 Kumho Ecstas in front of 255/45R20 Kumho Ecstas. And detailing is on-point, with braided fluid lines complementing a finned transmission cooler and a custom fuel tank.

JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF CUSTOM

One of this classic's coolest assets is a thoroughly upgraded interior that, just like the rest of the car, features just the right amount of customization. Pop the doors and you're immediately greeted by a plush bench seat that's centered on a retractable armrest. Below that seat, luxurious carpet floods metal foot pedals, a long Lokar shifter and a polished emergency brake. At the sides of that rug, custom side panels frame billet handles. At the front of those doors, a tastefully modified dash seats sedate Classic Instruments telemetry amid hardware for Vintage Air climate control. And in front of the driver, a banjo-style steering wheel spins a body-matched hoop around a polished, tilting column.
