If you think the Ford Mustang is anything less than first class, it's been a while since you took a good look at the world's best-selling sports car. From strip to show, it's hard to find a better multi-purpose platform than a modern Mustang. And when you combine 800 horsepower with six forward gears and a Shelby-tuned SVT chassis, you get effortless performance that'll match pretty much anything on the road. This 2009 Shelby GT500 Super Snake is a 4,939-mile survivor that's been decked in stunning red and black aesthetics. And if you enjoy going REALLY fast and turning a lot of heads, it's a modern Detroit marvel that's just your style!

BEST IN RED

Beginning life at Ford's excellent Flat Rock manufacturing facility, this taut GT500 has roamed less than 5K miles of smooth blacktop in the care of just one owner. Pull the car under the lights and you'll find immaculate Torch Red 2-stage that's been dressed in austere Shelby regalia. Below that lust worthy canvas, original sheetmetal fits precisely, displaying excellent build quality. A close look down that slab-sided fuselage reveals not so much as a dent or ding anywhere: spotless aesthetics that are reinforced by a clean CarFax report. And it all adds up to one slick modern legend that's far nicer than any piecemeal third party build!

Trimmings kick off with aggressive grilles that hang bold Cobra badging between black-bucket headlights, halogen fog lamps and a carbon fiber Super Snake splitter. At the top of that grille, a pinned Super Snake hood leads dressed mirrors, which reflect a factory-tint greenhouse that's sealed around requisite Super Snake quarter window covers. At the sides of that hood, sculpted fenders hang two more prominent Cobra emblems in front of stylish Shelby quarter scoops and carbon fiber rockers. And at the back of the car, an aggressive wing shades bold trunk lettering, a faux Shelby fuel filler, sequential taillights and polished Borla exhaust tips that are threaded through a tidy Shelby diffuser.

800 BEFORE 707, 797 AND 808 WERE COOL

Of course, there's only one question that comes to mind with any Shelby sports car – Does it go like hell? At the heart of this coupe, a stout, 5.4 liter 'Mod Motor' utilizes a Kenne Bell twin-screw supercharger to crank out an astonishing 800 horsepower! Front-and-center, the car's polished blower makes excellent use of a Kenne Bell Cold Air Induction System. At the sides of the engine, dynamic SVT coil covers combine with an array of Shelby caps and dipsticks to dress things up a bit. Speaking of Shelby accessories, there's a full Shelby Performance Cooling Package that keeps the balance between heat and power. As with all Shelby specialties, this Mustang proudly displays a small Shelby American badge that verifies its authenticity. And aesthetically, the spotless mill features a typical OEM-level appearance that displays hardly any signs of usage.

ATHLETIC GENETICS

As most performance car fans already know, Ford's D2C chassis is nothing short of excellent. And with a few quality bolt-ons, it sticks to the corners like the high-speed luge winner at the 2018 Winter Olympics. The upgrades begin with an SVT-tuned suspension that puts power down with the help of a roster of proven Shelby/Eibach components. Behind the smooth engine, a slick-shifting Tremec TR6060 6-speed spins power to a custom, Shelby-installed driveshaft, which spins Shelby-installed, 3.73 gears. At the corners of the car, red Shelby/Wilwood calipers squeeze giant drilled and slotted rotors behind standard Shelby ducts. Turns come courtesy of Ford's super-efficient power-assisted steering. Spent gases flow through throaty, true-dual exhaust, which aligns a factory crossover with raucous Borla Stinger mufflers. And all this first-class speed and agility rides on forged Shelby/Alcoa alloys, which spin 255/35ZR20 Michelin Pilot Super Sports in front of 275/35ZR20 Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

BEST IN BLACK

Inside this Ford, Shelby-branded buckets, featuring full power adjustment for the car's driver, ride opposite a tilting, leather-wrapped steering wheel that's fitted with convenient thumb buttons. A familiar Mustang dash hangs satin-trimmed instrumentation between optional Shaker 1000 audio and Auto Meter Carbon Fiber Ultra-Lite accessory gauges. Below that stereo, a billet short-throw shifter toggles an optional white ball on an impressive console that's finished with a Shelby-branded lid. A sequential Shelby plaque nicely complements sequentially Shelby sills. And naturally, all the luxuries you'd expect in a high dollar modern car are ready and waiting, including Cruise Control, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors and Remote Keyless Entry.

With a brutal V8, world class athleticism and a modern driving experience that's primed for optimal enjoyment, this Mustang delivers astounding performance with a surprising amount of luxury. And with its incredibly low mileage, striking appearance and premium comfort, it's the kind of car you buy, enjoy as much as you can, and hang on to for a long time. If you're looking for a great platform that goes above and beyond its common stablemates, it's time you become the proud owner of a legendary Shelby!
