MCACN Certified & Fully Documented Survivor GTO 400 RAIII 4-speed
Unique, mostly-original collector cars are like buried treasure. You know they're out there, but they're almost impossible to find. That's especially true when you're looking for a popular cruiser like this awesome Pontiac GTO. Certified as Vintage Legacy by Muscle Car & Corvette Nationals, this fantastic coupe is a well-optioned and extremely well preserved survivor that's accompanied by substantial documentation. Looking for an in-demand classic that's both authentic and exciting? This impressive Goat is a clean time capsule that'll transport you right back to the days when legendary American muscle ruled the world!
Selectively enjoyed by its original purchaser for close to 40 years, this super cool Poncho is as well documented and well preserved as collector cars get! The coupe's story begins in May of 1969 when it, and a Cameo convertible companion, were delivered to Cadiz, Ohio's Mikesell-Croskey Motors. In May of 1970, as the duo was methodically shuffled to less prominent display, a young Vietnam Veteran decided to make the dealership an offer it couldn't refuse. See, he'd spent months contemplating a replacement for his 1969 Chevy Camaro and, since his wife already had a 1968 GTO, adding a second Pontiac to the family seemed like a no-brainer. Anxious to peddle freshened 1970 metal, the dealership jumped at a golden sales opportunity, and this GTO officially went home with its first owner.
Over the next three years the Pontiac served as a reliable daily driver, even making the occasional treks to Florida and Pike's Peak. But, with ever increasing fuel costs and the Ram Air III's general disdain for icy Ohio roads, the owner decided to buy a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle to commute in. The GTO, officially retired to its basement garage, would become a meticulously maintained weekend cruiser for the next 30 years. But we're not talking just parked and forgotten, the car was updated, cleaned and serviced as needed. 1973 saw the addition of a new Hayes clutch and that cool Sun Super Tach you no doubt spotted in our photos. Cleverly, the owner stripped the Ram Air decals off the car's hood to get cheaper insurance rates. And when its original exhaust deteriorated beyond repair, he installed a Chevy 350 carburetor, aftermarket headers and rowdy Chevrolet side-pipes. Eventually the drives were reduced to annual Spring and Fall outings that included fresh wax and fresh 303 vinyl protectant. And finally, after the owner got tired of “walking on eggshells” to preserve what had become a really cool survivor, he casually listed the Pontiac on Hemmings.
As you would expect of a 'no hit' 35K-mile survivor GTO, the coupe was scooped up almost immediately. Owner number two promptly traded the Chevy side-pipes for a correct Gardner reproduction exhaust system, reinstalled the car's original Quadrajet carburetor and bolted up its original iron exhaust manifolds. And roughly two years later, the Pontiac was passed to owner number three: a passionate collector of premier survivor muscle. Joining 40 other historic rides, the never restored, never rebuilt GTO would headline this collection for about a decade. That's when, circa 2018, the collector inked it into a three-car trade for a survivor Shelby Mustang. Today, this Pontiac is a studiously maintained, comprehensively documented and nationally certified classic that's ready to continue its legacy with a new steward!
Decked in mostly-original Matador Red paint, the car was recently subjected to a $12K freshening that included fully documented dry ice blasting. A mostly-original engine bay still cradles an original Pontiac Ram Air III V8, which is still branded with its original “WS” sticker. An original drivetrain leads a mostly-original suspension. And, in case you're still not tired of reading the word “original”, an original Parchment vinyl top shades an original Red interior. Point is: if you want a car that's as close to a showroom-spec 1969 GTO as possible, you're looking at your next ride!
