Description

You had one and you let it get away, didn't you? Maybe you've been looking for one, but the only ones you're finding are ragged-out, cut-up, drag-raced heaps, right? You should know by now that RK Motors Charlotte is your first and only stop if you're looking for the cars of your youth in prime, low-mileage, unmolested condition. That's our specialty. The latest is this 1988 Camaro IROC-Z, loaded with the top-end 350 cubic inch V8 from the Corvette. If you're an F-body fan of a certain age, this was THE car to own, and here's your second chance.

Looking gorgeous in code 87U Medoum Gray Metallic paint, this IROC looks just a year or two old, not three decades old! As I said, finding an unmodified F-body is like finding an actress in Hollywood who hasn't visited a plastic surgeon, and it's obvious that someone tucked this car away for the future instead of getting caught up in hot cams and loud exhaust systems. Today, there are no signs of significant bodywork or damage repairs. Glossy and smooth, the 2-stage paint really pops in the sunlight, and if you look at the reflections from the photo studio, you can get a good idea of how straight this car really is. Nice!

The blacked-out trim on these cars is usually the first thing to start showing its age. UV light is hard on plastics and dark surfaces, especially the satin black that was so popular in the late 80s, so finding a car with crisp, dark pieces means you've found a car that has been stored indoors its entire life. Even the headlight buckets and black hood inserts on this one are deep, rich satin black. And this is definitely the one to own in terms of performance, with no flexible T-tops and added body bracing to slow it down. Glass is excellent all around, including the heated rear window, which is still one of the biggest single pieces of glass ever put on a production car.

In the horsepower department, this IROC is packing the top engine, a Corvette-derived L98 350 cubic inch tuned-port injection V8 (wow, that's quite a mouthful). Basically, when GM realized they couldn't run with the Mustangs surprisingly potent little 5.0 liter, they did what any smart management team does when faced with a pesky enemy get out the big guns. Transplanted almost intact from the Corvette, it makes 230 horsepower and 330 pounds of torque in the F-body, enough to make this a legitimate 13-second car in the right hands. In this particular Gray Metallic model, the engine is completely unmodified and in showroom-fresh condition. The original twin-snorkel air cleaner feeds the big V8, the original exhaust manifolds feed new 3” stainless steel catback performance exhaust, and the A/C system blows ice cold. Maintenance has been outstanding on this car, with a recent engine reseal.

Underneath, it's solid and clean, more proof that this is a well-cared-for original car. No rust, no damage, just OEM stuff that's been cared for from new by someone who cares. Late-model cars like this are always hard to describe simply because they're like new, and that's the highest praise I can give to this one. Wheels are very nicely preserved 16-inch IROC alloys with gold inserts wearing 245/50R16 Federal radials front and back.

The gray leather and cloth interior is also well preserved. It's a good compliment to the black leather steering wheel, dashboard and console. GM designers tried to keep things interesting by adding solid inserts where the seats wear the fastest, and I kind of like the vintage vibe it has in there. Look a little closer and you'll see that this Camaro is loaded up with options like power windows, power locks, and a power driver's seat, as well as the A/C I mentioned earlier. The headliner is taut and undamaged, the door panels are excellent, and the back seat appears to have never been used. Open the hatch and you'll find a perfectly preserved trunk area that still carries the original Bose audio components.
