Description

It seems there are two guaranteed ways to make a classic Camaro stop traffic. You can take the traditional path and buy a highly optioned original car which is fit for a plastic bubble. Or, you can pick up an old road warrior, grab a bunch of vendor catalogs and build the nastiest pro touring machine your money will buy. And really, who doesn't want a classic American muscle car that can accelerate, turn, and stop better than pretty much everything on the road? This killer 1968 Camaro convertible, which will whip most cars all the way around the track AND look like a million bucks doing it, features the perfect combination of vintage good looks and cutting edge technologically. So, forget about those original trailer queens which are constantly corralled by museum ropes. And forget about those me-too modern Camaros that'll depreciate faster than you pay for them. With this badass F1 pro tourer, you can have your cake and eat it too!

After spending most of its life prowling the streets of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this rock solid '68 Camaro was sent to The Installation Center in Cleveland, Georgia for a substantial rebuild and rejuvenation. Once its weathered steel was almost entirely replaced with high quality restoration panels, the journey continued to Classic Cars Southeast in Lebanon, Tennessee where it's essentially new body was fine-tuned to a level of fit and finish that's worthy of a feature car. Now equipped with precise panels which look much better than any original steel Camaro that rolled out of GMs factories in 1968, the car was bathed in a glossy coat of House of Kolor Galaxy Gray and detailed with House of Kolor Laser Red stripes. With awesome wet-look paint that now displayed a glare inducing shine, the Camaro was shipped to Greening Auto in Nashville, Tennessee where Jesse Greening applied a custom engine bay treatment and installed an attractive new interior. Finally, in the fall of 2010, the car debuted as a fantastic culmination of automotive expertise and no expense spared components which create one of the best looking and most desirable F1 Camaro pro-tourers on the planet!

With its classic pony car proportions and modernist body panels the first generation Camaro is already an inherently good looking design. And with today's vast aftermarket support, it has become an excellent canvas for any skilled builder to create a serious trophy winning show stopper. At the front of this slick '68 convertible, a stainless trimmed Rally Sport grille hangs electronically controlled Rally Sport headlights above an arrow straight chrome bumper, clear factory-equipped parking lights and an optional D80 SCCA style front spoiler. At the top of the car, a familiar chrome “Camaro by Chevrolet” emblem sits in front of a familiar ZL2 cowl induction hood; and a like-new stainless trimmed windshield is cleared by Detroit Speed Selecta Speed wipers. At the back of the car, a black cloth power top with a plastic rear window folds in front of a Modo Innovations power trunk lid, a traditional D80 decklid spoiler and a second chrome “Camaro by Chevrolet” emblem. And a satin black rear valence hangs pristine chrome trimmed LED tail lights and a Precision Coachworks billet aluminum fuel filler above a second wrap around chrome bumper, a completely seamless and custom cut roll pan and two stainless exhaust tips. In traditional pro-tourer fashion, the sides of this awesome F1 are devoid of most extraneous bolt-ons and baubles. Form comes courtesy of modified and re-positioned stainless trim spears, dent-free stainless wheel well trim and satin black rocker panels. And function is provided by dual chrome mirrors, like-new chrome trimmed marker lights and obligatory chrome door handles.

If you think the exterior of this car is impressive, you're going to LOVE what's under the hood! Painted in the same brilliant Laser Red that stripes the top of the car is a GM Performance Parts LS376/480 Hot Cam V8 which cranks out 480 low-RPM horsepower and a broad and flat 475 lb./ft. of torque. At the top of the engine, a body-matched LS3 high-flow intake sends air from a polished tube and two reusable air filters into polished aluminum rectangular port GM L92 heads. Simultaneously, GM factory electronic fuel injection delivers dino blood through stainless rails to high pressure fuel injectors. And Laser Red covered coils send spark through high performance Taylor wires to AC Delco spark plugs. That high compression combustion is cooled by a Griffin polished aluminum radiator which sends water past an electric fan to fresh hoses and a chrome thermostat housing. And the subsequent spent gases are evacuated through ceramic coated long tube headers which flow into a true dual stainless steel exhaust system. In front of the motor, a modern serpentine system, which has been fully outfitted with polished billet pulleys, keeps time while spinning both a chrome alternator and polished AC compressor. And behind the motor, a custom, body-matched firewall hangs a concealed Detroit Speed wiper motor next to a billet Wilwood master cylinder. The hot engine sits between a custom, body-matched radiator cowl, body-matched inner fenders which are accented by Felser fender braces, body-matched fuel rail covers, and a fully finished and insulated hood which is held up by Detroit Speed hood hinges and Marquez Design billet hood adjusters. There really is nothing more to ask for from an engine build than what you see here. From its billet aluminum engine mounts to its braided hoses and dipstick tubes, this 376 cubic inch small block looks spectacular, fires and idles perfectly, and accelerates like a rocket.

Behind that 480 horsepower GM Performance Parts V8 you'll find a Street and Performance supplied Borg Warner T56 6-speed manual transmission that easily turns every bit of the cars small block twist into neck snapping acceleration. Smoother than an old school Muncie rock-crusher, and much easier to repair and maintain, the stout T56 sends power to an Eaton 12 bolt Posi-traction rear end which is stuffed with strip ready 3.73 gears and covered with an attractive aluminum Moser differential cover. At the front of the car, a Chris Alston's Chassisworks G-Machine subframe and front suspension utilize tubular control arms, a manual steering rack, a thick sway bar and Varishock coil overs to provide exceptionally responsive handling. At the center of the car, a Hotchkis X-brace support combines with a tubular transmission crossmember and beefy subframe connectors to give the chassis a super solid feel. And at the back of the car, a Chris Alston's Chassisworks G-bar 4 bar rear suspension utilizes a second thick sway bar and two more Varishock coli overs to ensure excellent grip and solid acceleration. Stops come easy thanks to a Wilwood four wheel disc system which features four piston calipers, 12 inch G-street drilled and slotted front rotors, 12 inch Street drilled and slotted rear rotors, and a built in emergency brake system. And the soundtrack never ends thanks to fresh mandrel bent stainless pipes which flow through a compact X-pipe and great sounding Magnaflow mufflers to rear mounted stainless tips. The bottom of this Camaro is just as clean as its top featuring freshly undercoated floors, a full set of stainless hardware and braided hoses, a new Rock Valley stainless fuel tank, and a sweet set of 17 inch Foose Nitrous Chrome Legend wheels which wear sticky 235/45 front and 255/45 rear Fuzion ZR1 radials.

Inside this open air Chevy, the already pleasing appearance of a traditional '68 Camaro interior has been augmented by a series of well-planned and professionally executed custom accents which come courtesy of M&M Hot Rod Interiors and Marquez Design. The seats are lowback buckets which have been completely covered in leather and decorated with traditional Chevrolet ornamentation. At the front of the car, an Al Knoch Interiors dash hangs Classic Instruments gauges next to billet controls for the cars Vintage Air climate system and a Retrosound head unit. At the middle of the car, a traditional '68 Camaro console holds modern Classic Instruments accessory gauges in front of a traditional Hurst shifter, a custom chrome shift plate and chrome switches for the cars Electric Life power windows. And at the bottom of the car, new black carpet lies between custom bowtie branded sill plates, carpeted “Camaro” branded floor mats and traditional chrome trimmed pedals. In front of the driver, a great looking Grant steering wheel is sandwiched between a custom horn button and a Flaming River steering column. At the sides of the driver, Marquez Design door panels conceal Kenwood speakers which are boosted by Alpine amplifiers. And behind the driver, a body width brace bar combines with standard issue seatbelts to greatly improve safety.

With a beefy small block V8 and a completely modern suspension, this awesome pro touring convertible combines explosive horsepower and excellent handling with classic muscle car appeal. Nothing is simply 'adequate' about this car; it's an exceptionally well-done street machine that will provide years of invigorating performance and win trophies anywhere it goes. If you' re looking for some stunning Detroit metal which has the muscle to back up its killer good looks, this 1968 Camaro is your car!
