Description

When a company known for building ground-breaking snow mobiles and revolutionary watercraft entered the motorcycle market, most suspected that something innovative was on its way. When the Can Am was unveiled, those suspicions were confirmed. What BRP unleashed is unlike anything else on the road today – and that is definitely a good thing. Designed for both comfort and performance, the Can Am is a completely fresh take on the three-wheeler concept. This showroom fresh 2012 Can Am Special RT Limited carries every possible option and represents the best of BRP's offerings. With just 308 actual miles this bike is ready for years of touring and turning heads wherever it goes. If you've considered putting a Can Am in your garage, take a closer look at this super clean 2012 model.

With two wheels up front and one in the back, the setup is closer to a road-going snowmobile than anything else it's generally compared to. Given the stability a snowmobile offers and BRP's success with their line of Ski-Doo snowmobiles, that certainly makes sense. One thing is for sure: this bike turns more heads than most choppers while on the road. A big part of that appeal lies in its body cladding. Dressed in a glossy coat of Pearl White with black accents, the Can Am looks both futuristic and high end. The sloping front looks menacing with its array of angular lights and vents and the front fenders offer a complete front fascia that separates the Can Am from any other bike on the road. With low miles and a garage-kept past, this example looks brand new in every way – not even a rock chip to be found.

Looking over the details, it becomes very clear that this three-wheeler is first and foremost a luxury machine. The list of options could rival most full size cars. Up front, halogen headlights, fog lamps and LED running lamps sit below an electrically operated windshield. When the road is long and straight, riders can turn on cruise control and rest against the ultra-comfortable embroidered RT seat with lumbar support and a backrest for the passenger as well. Entertainment comes courtesy of an AM/FM audio system with iPod compatibility while a Garmin Zumo 660 GPS with mounting cradle and Bluetooth capability ensures you'll always get where you need to go. For those cool weather cruises, heated handlebar and passenger grips keep the extremities nice and warm. When it comes to storage, the Can Am makes a Honda Goldwing look unprepared. With lockable semi-rigid travel bags at the front, sides and rear, extended travel is a welcome possibility. Instrumentation is provided by multi-function dot-matrix/dual analog gauge that keeps tabs on speed, revs, miles covered, hours, gear position, temperature , fuel and time.

Underneath that impressive array of features, an equally impressive chassis incorporates several components typically found on four-wheels vehicles to ensure a riding experience like no other bike on the market. The starting point is a Surrounding Spar Technology (SST) frame that features a steel center beam for unparalleled rigidity. Handling comes from a familiar double A-arm setup up front while a swing arm with pneumatic adjustable preload serves to keep the rear end planted. While you may expect a heavy turning feel thanks to having two wheels up front, dynamic power steering makes turning an easily manageable process. Braking is equally controllable with foot-activated electronically-distribute power disc brakes that clamp down 4-piston calipers up front and a single piston caliper at the rear. The front wheels are 14”x5” chrome six-spokes while a 15”7” wheel lives at the rear. Should rider safety be one of your tops concerns, an electronic safety net including stability control, traction control and a vehicle stability system can be turned on with the push of a few buttons.

At the heart of this Can Am is a liquid-cooled Rotax 998cc V-twin engine. While the Austrian engine manufacturer provides engines for a large range of craft ranging from snowmobiles and boats to unmanned aircraft, this is one of the largest powerplants in its repertoire. Fueled by a multi-port EFI system with a 51mm throttle body, the mill turns out 106hp and 84lb.-ft. of torque in stock trim – more than enough to propel the 929 lb. three-wheeler down the road. Averaging approximately 30mpg, the engine is perfectly suited for touring the back roads or highways. Backing the smooth V-twin is a semi-automatic five-speed transmission that utilizes paddle shifters for a sports car-like gear changes. Unlike most bikes, it has a true reverse gear as well. Power is sent to the rear wheel thanks to a wide Kevlar-reinforced cogged belt that work great and looks awesome.

Documentation includes a hefty operator's guide and a maintenance schedule booklet to help keep your Can Am in top condition.

From its menacing front view to its luxurious appointments, this 2012 BRP Can Am Special RT Limited is unlike any other touring machine on the road. Much more than a motorcycle, it offers a riding experiencing somewhere between high-end cruiser and well-tuned sports car. If you're ready to turn heads piloting something truly different, this Can Am may be the perfect ride for you.
